Chapter 4 - The Cleansing

The paramedics arrived within ten minutes.

They ran tests, checked her blood pressure, and monitored the baby's heartbeat. When I heard that rapid, rhythmic thump-thump-thump filling the silent bedroom, I broke down.

I sat in the corner of the room, my face buried in my hands, sobbing silently. It was the sound of a miracle I had almost lost.

"She's severely overworked and malnourished, Mr. Hale," the lead medic told me quietly. "The baby's heart rate is stable for now, but she needs strict bed rest. No stress. No physical labor. Given her medical history, a premature birth is highly possible."

"She will have everything she needs," I assured him.

Once they left, Lucy fell into a deep, exhausted sleep. I sat beside her for an hour, just watching her breathe. I noted the dark circles under her eyes, the thinness of her arms, and the rough calluses on her fingers.

Then, I stood up.

It was time to go to war.

I walked into my home office and locked the door. I picked up my phone and dialed David Sterling, my personal attorney and the only man in the company not tied to my mother’s old regime.

"David. Drop whatever you are doing."

"Alexander? What's going on? Rumors are flying out of the lobby—"

"The rumors don't even cover half of it," I interrupted coldly. "I need you to freeze all company assets tied to Vivian Hale. I want her removed from the board by tomorrow morning."

"Alex, she's a founding member. That requires a vote—"

"She forged my signature on legal documents. She intercepted medical communications. She committed criminal extortion against my pregnant wife. You have twenty-four hours to draft the lawsuit. If the board doesn't vote her out, I will take the company public and dilute her shares to zero. Am I clear?"

There was a stunned silence on the line. "Crystal clear, sir."

"Next," I continued, pacing the room like a caged animal. "I want a full audit of Martin Voss's communications over the last seven months. He's fired. Seize his work laptop, his phone, and lock him out of the building. If he tries to take a single document, call the police."

"Done."

"And Natalie's family. The Vance Corporation."

"What about them?" David asked nervously.

"Pull all our investments. Cancel the hotel supply contracts with them. Cut them off completely."

"Alex, that will cost us millions in breach of contract fees."

"I don't care if it costs billions," I snarled. "I want everyone who stood by and laughed while my wife scrubbed floors to feel what it's like to have nothing."

I hung up the phone.

I spent the next three hours systematically dismantling my mother's influence within my company. I fired the security team that had escorted Lucy out. I fired the HR director who had processed her as a janitor without alerting me.

I was a hurricane of retribution.

When I finally emerged from the office, the sun had set. The penthouse was bathed in the soft glow of city lights.

I walked back into the bedroom. Lucy was awake.

She was sitting up against the pillows, wearing one of my oversized dress shirts that she had found in the closet. She looked small, but her eyes were guarded.

"You're awake," I said softly, staying by the door, terrified of crowding her. "Are you hungry? I can have the kitchen send up anything you want."

"I don't want hotel food," she said quietly.

"Okay. I'll cook. Or I'll order from that Italian place you used to love."

"Alexander," she interrupted, her voice steady but laced with a sadness that gutted me. "We need to talk. About what happens next."

"You're staying here," I said immediately. "You're my wife."

Lucy shook her head slowly. "I'm the mother of your child. But I don't know if I can be your wife anymore."

"Don't say that." I stepped forward, panic rising in my chest. "Lucy, I was lied to. I thought you abandoned me. If I had known—"

"I know you didn't know about the baby," she said softly. "But you believed I would just leave you for money. You didn't look for me. You didn't trust me."

I froze. Her words were like daggers.

"You let your mother poison you against me for years," she continued, tears finally welling in her eyes. "She always thought I was trash. And deep down, a part of you must have believed her, or you wouldn't have accepted my disappearance so easily."

"I was blind," I confessed, my voice breaking. "I was a coward. But I am not that man anymore. I fired Martin. I'm removing my mother from the company. I'm suing her, Lucy. I'm taking away everything she has."

May you like

Lucy looked away, staring out the window at the city skyline.

"Revenge doesn't fix my broken heart, Alex. And it doesn't erase the last seven months."
