Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage of Lies

Margaret called it family protection.

The papers called it power of attorney.

The rehab brochure called it care.

But Ava knew what it really was.

A trap.

Six months ago, Ava Vance was a vibrant woman.

She was the sole heiress to the Vance estate, a multi-million-dollar empire.

She had energy, strength, and a bright future with her husband, Daniel Sterling.

Then came the mysterious illness.

It started with mild dizziness.

Then muscle weakness.

Within two months, Ava lost the ability to stand on her own feet.

The doctors found nothing on standard scans.

Yet, Margaret was always there with a warm cup of herbal tea.

"Drink up, darling," Margaret would whisper with a cold smile.

"You need your rest."

Daniel was devastated by his wife’s sudden paralysis.

He loved Ava fiercely, but he was blinded by his mother’s devotion.

Margaret was a master actor.

She wiped Ava’s forehead in front of Daniel.

She wept heavy tears when the specialist had no answers.

She volunteered to be Ava’s primary caregiver.

"You must focus on the London merger, Daniel," Margaret had told him three weeks ago.

"The family company needs you."

"I will take care of your precious wife."

"You can trust your mother, can't you?"

Daniel was torn, but the corporate crisis was urgent.

He kissed Ava on the forehead before leaving.

"I'll be back in a month, my love," he whispered.

"Mom will keep you safe."

The moment the front gate closed behind Daniel, the mask fell.

Margaret dismissed the private night nurses.

She confiscated Ava’s cell phone.

She locked the gates of the estate.

The grand Sterling manor became a silent prison.

Ava was trapped inside her own body, unable to run, unable to call for help.

And every evening, Margaret brought the little paper cup.

Inside was a milky white liquid.

It had a bitter undertone beneath the heavy honey.

Every time Ava drank it, her mind went foggy.

Her legs felt heavier, like cold lead.

She wasn't sick.

She was being slowly, methodically poisoned.

Ava tried to spit it out once.

Margaret had grabbed her hair, tilting her head back with force.

"Don't be ungrateful, sweetie," Margaret had purred into her ear.

"Your money is useless if you're not mentally fit."

"Just let me manage it for you."

Ava realized the horrifying reality.

Margaret didn't want her dead—not yet.

She needed Ava alive just long enough to sign over control of the Vance Trust.

Forty million dollars.

And time was running out.
