Chapter 7 - The Arrest

The silence in the chapel was finally broken by the sound of heavy boots marching down the center aisle.
Two federal marshals, dressed in civilian suits but carrying badges, walked up to the altar. They didn't look at the mourners; their eyes were locked entirely on Brooke.
"Brooke Whitaker?" the lead marshal asked, his voice echoing off the stone walls.
Brooke shrank back, her hands trembling as she looked at the family attorney, who had already stepped away from her, hands raised in a defensive gesture.
"Richard!" Brooke screamed, her voice cracking with desperation. "Do something! You're my lawyer! Tell them they can't do this!"
"I... I had no knowledge of any forgery," Vance stammered, his face pale as he backed toward the exit. "Ms. Whitaker assured me the document was fully executed and authorized. I was merely performing my legal duties."
"You coward!" Brooke shrieked.
"Ms. Whitaker," the marshal said, stepping up to the altar and producing a pair of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, uttering a forged document, and conspiracy to commit estate fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around Brooke's wrists, she looked at me with a hatred so pure it seemed to vibrate in the air.
"You think you've won, Avery?" she spat, her face twisted in a mask of pure rage. "You think you're the hero because you wear a uniform? You spent five years playing soldier while I stayed here and dealt with the real world! You destroyed this family!"
"No, Brooke," I said quietly, looking down at the silver ring on my finger. "You destroyed yourself the moment you tried to steal from a dying man."
The marshals led her down the aisle, her expensive heels clicking loudly against the stone floor. The mourners parted for her, but this time, there was no sympathy in their eyes. There was only disgust and embarrassment. The show was over, and the queen had been dethroned.
General Cross stepped up to the lectern, replacing the forged document with his own official military folder.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the General said, his powerful voice instantly restoring order to the room. "We will now proceed with the honorable military service for Sergeant Major Thomas Whitaker. As requested by the deceased, this service will be led by his commanding officer—and his granddaughter."

He turned to me and offered a solemn nod.
"Colonel Whitaker, the floor is yours."
