Chapter 6 - The Family Intervention

The turning point came two weeks later.
I received an unexpected email from my Aunt Susan. It wasn't angry or accusatory like her previous text messages. It was a simple request to meet for coffee at a neutral location.
I agreed, but I didn't go unprepared. I brought my laptop.
Aunt Susan was waiting for me at a small café downtown. She looked nervous, stirring a cup of herbal tea.
"Hello, Daniel," she said softly as I sat down.
"Aunt Susan."
She sighed, folding her hands on the table. "Your parents are a wreck. Your mother hasn't stopped crying for weeks. They are planning to sue you for emotional distress and financial support for Emily's baby. The family is tearing itself apart."
"Emily isn't pregnant," I said flatly.
Susan blinked, taken aback. "What? Of course she is. Your mother swore—"
I opened my laptop. I pulled up the high-resolution photo of Emily holding the glass of sparkling wine in my apartment.
"This was taken the day they broke in," I said, turning the screen toward her. "She was drinking alcohol. Unless she's recklessly endangering a fetus, there is no baby. It's a lie to make you all feel sorry for her."
Susan stared at the screen, her mouth slightly open.
Then, I played the security footage. I showed her my parents marching into my building. I showed her the locksmith destroying my property. I showed her the building regulations.
"They told me you invited them over to help you decorate, and then you lost your temper and threw them out," Susan whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. "They said you hit your father."
"I never touched him," I said. "They broke into my home, tried to move Emily in by force, and when I stopped them, they started a campaign to ruin my life. Emily even went to my workplace to try and get me fired."
Susan covered her mouth with her hand, tears welling in her eyes.
"Oh, Daniel. I am so sorry. We all just... we believed them. Your father was always so proud, we never thought he would stoop to something so criminal."
"He's not proud," I corrected. "He's controlling. And he realized he can't control me anymore."
I handed her a printed copy of the Cease and Desist letter, along with the bill from the fire department that Marla was currently pursuing against Luke.
"I am giving you this so you can show the rest of the family," I told her. "I am not the villain in this story. But I am done being their victim. If they continue to harass me, I will press criminal charges, and they will go to jail."
Susan took the papers with trembling hands.
"I'll show them," she promised. "I'll make sure everyone knows the truth."
That evening, the family group chat—which I had muted but not left—exploded. Susan had posted the pictures and the facts.
The backlash against my parents was swift and brutal. Relatives who had condemned me were suddenly demanding explanations from my father. My mother's lies were unraveling in real-time.

Within an hour, my father left the group chat. Emily and Luke followed shortly after.
The silence that followed was absolute. The war of public opinion was over, and they had lost.
