Chapter 5 - The Resignation

Thursday morning arrived with gray skies and the smell of impending rain.

At exactly 9:00 AM, the board of directors for Whitmore Manufacturing sat down for their monthly executive meeting in their glass-walled high-rise in downtown Boston.

I was absent.

Instead, a courier walked into the boardroom and handed a thick, sealed envelope to my father, who was presiding over the table.

At exactly 9:05 AM, I hit ‘Send’ on my laptop.

I sat in Margaret Sloan’s office, watching the confirmation screen.

“It’s done,” I said.

Margaret poured two cups of herbal tea and handed me one. “Walk me through it, Claire.”

“I just sent a mass email to every major investor, stakeholder, and partner associated with Whitmore Manufacturing,” I explained, blowing on the hot tea. “Attached to the email is my formal letter of resignation from the board.”

“And what else?” Margaret prompted, her eyes gleaming.

“The official, unredacted police report detailing the arrest of Vanessa Whitmore for child endangerment, and the investigation into Richard Whitmore for assault.” I took a sip. “I also included the security footage from the country club.”

I had paid a very hefty sum to an insider at the hotel to acquire a raw copy of the footage before the police sealed the file.

“By now,” I continued, checking my watch, “my father is opening the courier package. It contains the exact same documents, along with a notice of my civil lawsuit for ten million dollars.”

Margaret leaned back in her chair. “The investors are going to panic. Corporate morality clauses are very strict these days. No one wants to fund a company run by a man who drowns children.”

“That’s only phase one,” I said softly.

“Phase two?”

“I also BCC’d the Securities and Exchange Commission with a separate file regarding Mark’s offshore accounting habits. And I sent the environmental cover-up documents to the New York Times.”

Margaret actually laughed out loud. It was a rare, genuine sound.

“Claire,” she said, shaking her head in admiration. “You are absolutely ruthless.”

“They tried to kill my daughter, Margaret. Ruthless doesn't even begin to cover it.”

Within the hour, the fallout was catastrophic.

My phone exploded, but this time, it wasn't family members demanding silence. It was Google alerts.

Financial news outlets were breaking the story. Whitmore Manufacturing stock was already plummeting as rumors of the CEO’s arrest and a massive SEC probe leaked to the trading floors.

My mother called. I answered and immediately put it on speaker.

“Claire! What have you done?!” she shrieked, her voice frantic. “The board is demanding your father step down! The police just showed up at Mark’s office with a warrant for his computers! You are destroying our lives!”

May you like

I stared at the phone. “No, Mother. I am just providing the consequences you all managed to avoid your entire lives. Tell Dad he should have let me pull her out of the water.”

I hung up and blocked her number permanently.
