Chapter 5 - The Trust Fund Trap

Six months passed.
We lived at Uncle Julian’s farm, miles away from the nightmare we had escaped.
The air was clean. We learned to sleep with the doors unlocked.
We learned that loud noises didn't always mean violence.
But the shadow of the upcoming trial loomed over us.
A week before our eighteenth birthday, Julian drove us into the city to meet with the estate lawyers.
Our father’s former colleague, Mr. Sterling, welcomed us into a massive oak-paneled office.
"Happy early birthday, girls," he said with a warm, sad smile. "Your father would be incredibly proud of you both."
He placed a thick folder on the desk.
"As you know, the trust unlocks fully on your eighteenth birthday. However, Arthur Vance's defense team has filed a motion to freeze the assets."
Julian scoffed. "On what grounds?"
"They are claiming that Eleanor, as their mother, is entitled to half the estate for ‘reimbursement of child-rearing expenses,’ which would conveniently go toward paying Arthur's massive legal fees."
Chloe clenched her fists. "Can they do that?"
"No," I said, before the lawyer could answer.
Everyone looked at me.
"Dad was a forensic accountant," I explained, pulling a flash drive from my pocket. "He taught me how to read ledgers when I was twelve. When I was hiding the phone, I also found Arthur's laptop in his home office."
I placed the flash drive on Mr. Sterling's desk.
"I copied everything. His bank statements, his offshore accounts, his gambling debts. He hasn't just been stealing from our mother. He's been embezzling from his own company for years."
Mr. Sterling's eyes widened behind his glasses.
He plugged the drive into his computer and spent ten silent minutes scrolling through the files.
When he finally looked up, he was smiling.
"Maya, this isn't just evidence to protect your trust fund," Mr. Sterling said. "This is federal fraud. Even if he somehow beats the abuse charges, the IRS and the FBI will bury him for the next thirty years."

Arthur had spent years trying to make us feel powerless.
He hadn't realized that while he was busy playing a monster, I was quietly gathering the weapons to destroy him.
