Chapter 11 - The Judgment of Table One

“You dare accuse my daughter of murder?” Arthur Cole shouted, his hand slamming down onto the armrest of his chair.
“This is slander, Garrett!”
“You are making wild accusations to cover for your own breach of contract!”
“Councilman Vance, Judge Sterling—look at my daughter!” Arthur cried, pointing to Madison’s neck brace.
“She is the victim here!”
Madison immediately produced a soft, trembling sob, wiping a non-existent tear from her pale cheek.
“I only wanted to love his family,” Madison whimpered softly, her voice engineered to play upon the patriarchal sympathies of the elderly syndicate bosses.
“I tried to help Mrs. Weston with her medicine, and this woman attacked me out of pure spite.”
Dominic Falcone frowned, glancing between the weeping girl and Garrett Weston’s unreadable face.
“We need proof, Garrett,” Falcone said gravely.
“The Cole family has held the northern docks for thirty years.”
“We cannot break a sacred alliance on the word of an employee.”
Garrett Weston did not argue, did not raise his voice, and did not utter a single insult.
He reached into his breast pocket, retrieved a small wireless remote control, and pressed the center button.
Instantly, the chandelier lights above the fourteen dining tables dimmed to near-total darkness.
On the smooth, flat plaster wall behind Table One, a massive high-definition projector hummed to life, beaming a crystal-clear 4K video feed across a twelve-foot expanse.
The video was time-stamped from the previous evening at 9:14 PM.
The camera angle was high, looking down with clinical clarity from the center of the brass chandelier directly into the booth at Table One.
The room watched in stunned, breathless silence as Madison Cole’s left elbow shifted backward on the screen, deliberately and violently shoving Elena’s arm to tip the boiling beef consommé into Margaret’s lap.
A collective gasp echoed across the dining room as the footage clearly captured Elena Vasquez throwing her bare forearm across the falling ceramic bowl, taking the full, searing brunt of the boiling broth to shield the elderly woman.
The camera zoomed in with terrifying digital clarity, showing Elena’s teeth gritting in agony as her flesh blistered beneath the hot broth, while Madison smiled faintly into her martini glass.
Madison’s face in the real room drained of all color, turning the gray shade of wet plaster.
“That… that was an accident!” Madison stammered, stepping backward into her father’s shadow.
“The waitress stumbled!”
Garrett pressed the remote again.
The projection shifted to the narrow oak-paneled corridor outside the private powder room at 11:42 PM.
The audio feed, captured by high-sensitivity directional microphones embedded in the wood moldings, kicked in with horrifying, razor-sharp fidelity.
Madison’s voice echoed through the basement dining room, cold, venomous, and dripping with sadistic cruelty:
“You pathetic old hag… tomorrow morning, I’m bringing the commitment papers to Garrett’s office… by next Friday, you’ll be locked in a private ward in Lake Forest, staring at white walls until your miserable heart finally stops beating…”
The entire council of hardened criminals recoiled in visceral disgust.
In the strict code of the Chicago underworld, mothers were sacred, untouched by the violence of the streets; to torment an elder was a crime punishable by immediate death.
The video showed Madison violently wrenching the heavy gold signet ring from Margaret’s swollen, arthritic fingers, twisting the joint until Margaret cried out in agony.
It showed Madison raising her hand to strike the weeping, defenseless matriarch across the face.
And then, it showed Elena Vasquez crossing the corridor like a thunderbolt, slamming the heavy brass serving tray into Madison’s arm, pinning the billionaire’s daughter against the wall, and uttering the words that now defined the night:
“Don’t touch her again… if you ever lay a single finger on this woman again, I will tear that lying tongue out of your throat… I will end you.”
Garrett clicked the remote, shutting down the projection, and brought the room’s lights back up to full brilliance.
The silence in the room was absolute, heavy with the stench of impending doom.
Arthur Cole stood paralyzed, his mouth opening and closing without producing a sound, while Madison began to tremble with uncontrollable, pathetic terror.
“You spoke of contracts, Arthur,” Garrett said, his voice flat, icy, and echoing with finality.
Garrett picked up the hollow titanium cylinder from Table One, unscrewed the base, and tossed the yellowed vellum documents into the center of Dominic Falcone’s table.
Falcone picked up the parchment, adjusted his reading glasses, and scanned the text.
The old union boss’s eyes went wide with shock.
“These are Donald Weston’s original port charters,” Falcone announced to the entire council, his voice shaking with righteous fury.
“Arthur Cole never owned the northern docks.”
“He was merely a contracted operator whose license expired the moment his family committed physical violence against Donald’s heirs.”
Falcone looked up from the papers, glaring at Arthur Cole with utter, murderous contempt.
“You forged your title, Arthur,” Falcone spat, tossing the documents back onto the table.
“You stole Donald’s empire while his blood was still wet in Cicero, and you brought your viper daughter into this house to torture his widow.”
“No! Wait! Dominic, listen to me!” Arthur panicked, waving his hands frantically as his high-priced attorneys quietly packed their briefcases and backed away from him.
“We can renegotiate! I will give Garrett eighty percent of the dock revenues!”
“You have no revenues to give, Arthur,” Elena spoke up, her clear, steady voice cutting through Arthur’s hysterical pleas.
She slid a stack of certified financial audits across Table One.
“Arthur Cole leveraged every municipal crane on the Chicago River to private syndicates in Manhattan,” Elena explained with icy precision.
“He has three million dollars in unpaid union pension debts, and his holding company enters default at midnight tonight.”
“He didn't want this marriage for an alliance; he wanted to steal the Weston family trust to pay off his loans before he ended up in federal prison.”
Arthur Cole collapsed into an empty chair, his face buried in his hands, completely and utterly broken.
Madison dropped to her knees on the floor, weeping hysterically, reaching out toward Garrett’s polished shoes.
“Garrett, please!” Madison sobbed, her manicured fingers clawing at the hem of his trousers.
“I did it for us! I did it so we could have everything!”
“I love you, Garrett!”
Garrett Weston looked down at her with the cold, detached disgust a man reserves for a venomous insect squashed beneath his boot.
He stepped back, letting her fingers slide uselessly off the fine wool of his trousers.
“Marco,” Garrett commanded softly.
Marco and four armed enforcers stepped forward instantly, seizing Arthur and Madison Cole by their arms and wrenching them to their feet.
“Escort Mr. Cole and his daughter to the federal courthouse on Dearborn Street,” Garrett ordered, not looking at them.
“Deliver the financial audits, the video recordings of the assault, and the forged maritime leases directly to the United States Attorney’s desk.”
“Strip them of their vehicles, their properties, and their family names.”
May you like
“If either of them ever sets foot within the city limits of Chicago again, bury them beneath the northern piers.”
Madison screamed and kicked as Marco dragged her backward toward the stairs, her hysterical wails fading into the rainy night above as the heavy lacquered door slammed shut forever.
