Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Lies

For the next three days, my life became a cycle of feeding Lily, changing diapers, and diving into the labyrinth of Marcus's financial history. The physical pain from the assault and the childbirth was dulling, managed by painkillers, but my mind was sharper than it had been in years.
I started with the joint checking account. On the surface, it looked normal. Mortgage payments (which were actually property taxes, since I owned the house outright), utility bills, groceries. But forensic accounting isn't about looking at what is there; it's about finding what is missing.
I ran a regression analysis on our monthly expenditures over the past two years. There was a sudden spike in cash withdrawals starting exactly fourteen months ago. Always just under $10,000 to avoid federal reporting requirements. Smurfing. A classic money-laundering technique.
“You arrogant fool,” I whispered to the empty room.
I traced the IP addresses of his login history. He had been accessing our accounts not just from his office, but from a server routed through the Cayman Islands. It took me six hours and three cups of decaf coffee to break through the shell companies he had set up.
Marcus owned a logistics firm, a medium-sized company that he constantly bragged about. I pulled the public tax records for his business and cross-referenced them with the hidden accounts I had just uncovered.
The numbers told a story of utter betrayal.
Marcus wasn't just hiding marital assets. He was embezzling from his own investors to fund a crippling gambling addiction and a lifestyle he couldn't afford. And the worst part? He had forged my signature to leverage my family trust as collateral for a high-risk commercial loan.
If his company went under, the bank would take my house. He had quite literally gambled away my daughter's future.
The doorbell rang, startling me. I checked the security cameras on my second monitor. It was Nolan. He was standing on the porch, holding a bouquet of flowers, looking uncomfortable.
I didn't open the door. I picked up my phone and dialed Elena.
“Nolan is on my porch,” I said.
“Do not let him in. I’m sending a patrol car,” she replied instantly.
“I’m not letting him in. But Elena, I found it. The motive.”
“What did you find, Claire?”
“Marcus isn't just an abuser. He’s a fraud. He’s in debt for over three million dollars, and he used my trust as a guarantee. That’s why he didn't want a divorce. That’s why he wanted me cowed and submissive. If I left him, the financial house of cards would collapse, and he’d go to federal prison.”
Silence hung on the line. Then, my sister let out a low whistle.
“Send me the files, Claire. Everything. We are going to destroy this man.”
I looked back at the camera feed. Nolan had given up and was leaving the flowers on the porch. He slipped an envelope under the door before walking back to his car.
After he drove away, I went to the door and pulled the envelope out. Inside was a handwritten note on expensive stationery.

Claire, we know you’re stressed. Drop the charges, let Marcus come home, and we can all pretend this never happened. Don't ruin your family over a little argument.
I laughed out loud. The sound echoed in the empty hallway. A little argument. They still thought I was the weak, quiet wife in the corner. They had no idea they had just declared war on a woman holding the launch keys.
