Chapter 7 - The Purge

The rain began to fall in heavy, angry sheets across Boston. Renick didn't send a team to find Sully. He went himself. He found his treacherous estate manager in the underground parking garage, hastily packing bags into the trunk of a sleek black sedan. Sully froze as the heavy metal doors of the garage rolled shut and locked with a loud clang. From the shadows, Renick emerged. He didn't yell. He didn't run. He simply walked toward the man he had once considered a brother.

“Boss,” Sully said, raising his hands, trying to play innocent. “Thank God you’re okay. I was just going to secure the safe house—” “Don't insult my intelligence, Sully,” Renick’s voice echoed off the concrete walls. “You sold me out to the Morettis. You let them into my home. Near my daughter.” Sully dropped the act. His face twisted into an ugly sneer. “I did it for the family, Renick! You’re weak! Ever since that maid and her brat moved upstairs, you’ve lost your edge!”

“My edge?” Renick chuckled darkly. “You think I lost my edge because I remembered how to be a father? Because I found a woman who isn't afraid of me?” Sully drew his weapon fast, but Renick was faster. Two silenced shots echoed in the damp garage. Sully’s gun clattered to the floor as he fell to his knees, clutching his chest. He stared up at Renick in shock, choking on his own blood.

“You brought a war into my house, Sully,” Renick said, standing over him, his eyes devoid of mercy. “You endangered my daughter. You hurt Belle.” “The Morettis... won't stop...” Sully gasped out. “They will when they see what I send them in the morning,” Renick replied coldly. He turned his back as Sully took his final, rattling breath.

That night, the Boston underworld trembled. Renick unleashed the full, terrifying might of the Kavanaugh syndicate. With Sully’s betrayal exposed, Renick knew exactly where the Moretti family had been getting their intel. He struck their warehouses, their illegal casinos, and their docks simultaneously. By sunrise, the Moretti family was completely dismantled, their leadership begging for a truce. Renick granted it, but the cost was absolute submission. He made sure every criminal in the city understood one clear message: The Kavanaugh estate was impenetrable, and anyone who looked twice at the woman and children inside would face hell on earth.

When Renick finally returned to the estate, the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon. He was battered, exhausted, and covered in grime. He didn't go to his bedroom. He went straight to the medical wing. Belle was asleep, holding Micah’s hand, who had crawled into the bed beside her. On the armchair in the corner, Brinley was curled up under a blanket, watching over them both. Renick leaned against the doorframe, watching his strange, beautiful, newly formed family. The war was over. The monsters were dead.
