Chapter 2 - The Sound of Breaking Glass

The VIP club’s bass continued to thump against my ribs long after midnight had come and gone.
Vanessa was tracing lazy circles across the lapel of my jacket, her eyes heavy-lidded with a mixture of alcohol and artificial affection.
"You know, you’re awfully relaxed for a man about to change diapers for the next eighteen years," she purred, leaning in to steal a sip of my scotch.
"Let her sweat it out a little," I scoffed, waving a hand dismissively toward the exit. "Emily needs to learn that the world doesn't revolve around her every whim. If I come running every time she drops a plate, I’ll never have a moment of peace."
My friend Marcus chuckled, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "You’ve got her well-trained, man. Most guys would be panicking by now."
"Training is everything," I boasted, leaning back and resting my arm along the top of the leather couch. "A woman needs boundaries, or she’ll walk all over you."
None of us knew that miles away, Emily’s body was growing colder against the stone floor of our grand foyer.
The digital clock on the dashboard of Alexander’s speeding Aston Martin flashed 2:14 AM as he blew through a yellow light on Biscayne Boulevard.
His knuckles were white against the steering wheel, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked rhythmically beneath his left eye.
"Stay on the line, dispatch," Alexander barked into the hands-free bluetooth system, his voice cold and terrifyingly focused. "I need local PD and an expedited trauma team cleared for the estate on Ocean Crest Drive. The main gates are biometric-locked, so have my tech specialist patch into my dash interface to override the local relay."
"Sir, breaking into a private residential estate without a warrant—" the dispatcher began cautiously.
"If that woman and her child die because of your bureaucratic hesitation, I will personally buy your department, dismantle it brick by brick, and fire every single person involved," Alexander snarled, cutting her off with a terrifying finality that left no room for argument. "Override the gates now."
The silence on the line lasted only two seconds before a computerized beep echoed through the car speakers.
"Gate override successful. Proceed with caution, Mr. Hayes."
Alexander didn't bother responding; he slammed his foot down on the accelerator, the engine roaring like an injured animal as the sleek black vehicle surged forward into the night.
Back at the club, the DJ announced the last call for alcohol, and the flashing strobe lights slowed down to a dull, pulsing amber.
"Come on," Vanessa whispered, tugging gently on my sleeve. "Let's go back to my place. I'm exhausted, and frankly, I'm sick of hearing about your wife."
"Let's go," I agreed, standing up and tossing a thick wad of hundred-dollar bills onto the sticky table as a tip.
I didn't bother checking my phone; the airplane mode icon remained stubbornly lit at the top of the dark screen, keeping the outside world at bay while I drove us toward Vanessa’s luxury apartment in Brickell.
I was entirely wrapped up in the intoxicating illusion of my own impunity, believing that consequences were things that happened to other, less careful men.
I had no idea that Alexander’s car had just smashed through the perimeter of my estate, the heavy iron security gates swinging wide open under the force of an industrial hydraulic winch he had kept in his trunk for emergencies.
The tires of his Aston Martin crunched violently over the gravel driveway, sliding to a dramatic halt right in front of the sweeping front steps of my mansion.
Before the car had even fully settled into park, Alexander threw the door open and sprinted up the marble stairs.
He didn't bother knocking; he threw his shoulder against the heavy mahogany double doors once, twice, before the antique brass lock splintered inward with a loud crack.
The heavy scent of metallic blood hit him the moment he stepped foot inside the foyer.
"Emily!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with a raw, desperate urgency that shattered the quiet of the empty house.
He dropped to his knees beside her broken body, sliding his hands beneath her shoulders to check for a pulse.
Her skin was ice-cold, her breathing shallow and ragged, like a drowning swimmer gasping for air just before the final wave pulls them under.
"Dr. Vance, get in here now!" Alexander roared into his lapel mic, his eyes scanning the horrifying pool of blood pooling beneath her.
Within seconds, two men in sterile medical scrubs carrying heavy trauma kits burst through the shattered front doors behind him, their professional detachment instantly kicking in as they assessed the catastrophic scene.
"Severe hemorrhagic shock," the lead medic muttered, unlatching a saline drip and jabbing a needle expertly into the crook of Emily’s arm. "The fetus is in distress. We have to move her right now, or we’ll lose them both."
Alexander scooped Emily’s limp body into his arms with terrifying gentleness, lifting her as if she weighed nothing at all.

"You're not dying on my watch, Emily," he murmured fiercely against her damp hair, carrying her down the steps and straight into the back of the waiting trauma van parked in the driveway.
As the ambulance doors slammed shut and the sirens wailed into the quiet Miami night, I was unlocking the door to Vanessa’s apartment, completely oblivious to the fact that my entire empire had just begun to crumble.
