Chapter 12 - The New Dawn

Two years later.
The crisp Alpine air drifted through the open windows of the St. Odette Palliative Care Clinic in Geneva.
Margaret walked through the sunlit hallways, wearing her white administrator's coat. Her dark hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and the shadows that had once haunted her eyes were completely gone.
She was thriving.
The clinic was renowned for its revolutionary approach to end-of-life care, focusing on dignity, family, and comfort.
She stopped by Room 102 to chat with a patient, writing a small note in her new notebook.
Mr. Dubois loves classical piano.
As she stepped out of the room, she heard the familiar hum of a motorized wheelchair.
Teddy was coming down the hall.
Thanks to the intense therapy and cutting-edge treatments, Teddy had regained partial use of his right arm. He still used his eye-tracking device to speak rapidly, but his posture was strong, and his eyes danced with mischief.
His tablet chimed.
“You’re late for lunch, slowpoke,” the mechanical voice announced.
Margaret laughed. A real, loud, uninhibited laugh.
"I'm coming, Teddy," she smiled.
Standing behind Teddy's wheelchair was Austin.
He wore a casual grey sweater, looking entirely out of place for a former underworld kingpin, yet perfectly at home. He had handed control of his Baltimore operations to his lieutenants, choosing to spend his days managing legitimate investments from Europe.
Austin walked up to Margaret and gently kissed her forehead.
There was no fear when he touched her. Only warmth. Only safety.
"Hard day?" Austin asked, wrapping an arm around her waist.
"A beautiful day," Margaret corrected him, leaning her head against his shoulder.
They walked toward the cafeteria together, a family built from broken pieces, finally whole.

Margaret looked at the silver ring on her left hand, catching the sunlight. She had crossed her name out in the little black notebook years ago, believing her life was over.
She smiled, realizing that the real story had only just begun.
