Chapter 5 - The Tables Turn: Handcuffs In The Boardroom

Detective Reynolds didn't waste a single breath on pleasantries. He walked straight toward the head of the table, stopping inches away from Julian, whose breathing had instantly turned shallow and erratic. "Julian Miller, you are being placed under arrest for the felony charges of premeditated attempted murder, aggravated domestic assault resulting in grievous bodily harm, conspiracy to commit insurance and property fraud, and the endangerment of a minor," the detective recited in a flat, monotone voice that carried the weight of absolute authority. Julian’s face turned an ashen, sickly shade of grey. He spun around to look at his attorney, stammering frantically, "This is absurd! It's a malicious lie! My wife slipped on a wet kitchen floor—she's mentally unstable!"
Marcus, Julian's high-priced attorney, scrambled desperately through his papers, trying to interject, demanding to see the arrest warrant and emergency injunctions. Sarah Vance smoothly slid her own certified portfolio across the table, flipping open the court-stamped documents signed directly by the Chief Judge of the Superior Court. "You might want to review Exhibit A through D before you start shouting about legalities, counselor," Sarah stated coldly. "That tablet contains the uncompressed, military-grade cloud backup footage captured by the secondary security grid installed inside Mr. Miller's former residence—footage that clearly records Mr. Miller and his mother, Evelyn, verbally plotting this exact assault forty-eight hours prior, and executing the physical shove that nearly murdered my client and her unborn child."

Julian lunged forward, his hands slamming onto the table, his eyes wide with blind panic and sheer, unadulterated terror. "That camera was destroyed! I ripped it out of the wall with my own hands!" he screamed, completely unmasking himself in front of his own attorney and the detectives. The entire conference room went dead silent. Julian froze instantly as the horrifying realization of what he had just shouted hit him like a freight train. He had just confessed out loud, in the presence of two sworn police officers and independent legal counsel, to destroying evidence and intentionally staging the crime scene. A look of sheer horror washed over Marcus’s face as he slowly closed his files, realizing his client had just completely sabotaged any possible defense.
Detective Reynolds didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He grabbed Julian’s arm with a firm, inescapable grip, yanking him away from the table and spinning him around. The metallic clink of handcuffs snapped sharply around Julian’s wrists as the cold steel locked into place. Julian let out a desperate, strangled gasp, his legs buckling slightly as reality crashed down upon him. "You can't do this! Do you know who I am? My mother is going to—" Julian shrieked, thrashing uselessly as the detective hauled him toward the exit. "Save your speeches for the magistrate, Mr. Miller," Detective Reynolds interrupted coldly, shoving Julian out of the glass-walled boardroom and into the hallway, leaving his stunned lawyer staring blankly at the empty chair.
