Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Closed Doors of Ellison Law

The entire ballroom stared in stunned silence as the first frame of the video flickered onto the massive LED screen. The initial image was sharp, high-definition, and unmistakably clear. It showed the interior of a luxurious corner office on the top floor of a downtown Boston skyscraper—the exact office where Graham Ellison ran his high-powered real estate law firm.

A collective murmur rippled through the crowd like wind blowing across a field of tall grass.

On the screen, Graham was sitting behind a massive mahogany desk, but he wasn't reviewing legal briefs or drafting property contracts. He was locked in a passionate, undeniably intimate embrace with a stunning blonde woman wearing a tailored corporate suit. The audio kicked in a second later, crystal clear thanks to a high-end directional microphone that must have been planted somewhere in the room.

“—don’t worry about Vanessa,” Graham’s voice boomed through the high-end surround sound speakers, rich, smooth, and utterly carefree. “She’s completely wrapped around my finger. She thinks she’s marrying a multi-millionaire attorney who’s going to fund her lifestyle forever. She has no idea that the firm has been bleeding money for eighteen months, or that my personal accounts are completely wiped out.”

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks halfway across the dance floor. Her jaw dropped open, her eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated horror. She looked from the screen back to Graham, whose polished, confident facade had completely shattered into a mask of pure terror.

“Turn it off! Someone cut the power!” Graham roared, lunging backward, but the venue staff were too paralyzed by shock to move an inch.

On the video, the woman in the office—who several guests in the audience immediately recognized as Julianna Vance, a junior partner at Graham’s firm—laughed seductively and stroked his lapels.

“And what about the wedding, Graham? Are you really going to go through with marrying the screaming social climber?” Julianna asked on the screen, her voice dripping with amusement.

Graham leaned back in his leather executive chair, a cynical, cruel smirk twisting his handsome face. “Of course I am, gorgeous. Her family thinks we’re swimming in old money, but the truth is, I’m drowning in federal tax liens and corporate debt. The only thing keeping my creditors at bay is the anticipation of Vanessa’s substantial trust fund—or rather, the trust fund her doting mother controls. Once we tie the knot, I legally get access to sign off on family real estate assets in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. As soon as the marriage certificate is signed and filed on Monday morning, I’m liquidating those assets, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and moving our operations to the Cayman Islands. Vanessa is just a convenient legal vehicle to save my skin.”

The silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning units cooling the space. Three hundred elite guests—business associates, high-society friends, wealthy investors, and local politicians—sat frozen in their seats, their champagne flutes hovering halfway to their mouths.

My mother, Patricia, clutched her pearls so hard her knuckles turned completely white. Her face had gone from a proud, smug expression to a look of absolute, petrified devastation. She looked at Graham, her voice trembling as she finally found the breath to speak.

“Graham... what is this? What is he saying?” Patricia demanded, her voice cracking as she took a step toward the sweetheart table.

Graham turned around, his polished charm completely evaporated, revealing a desperate, cornered animal. He looked at Vanessa, who was now shaking so violently she looked like she might collapse onto the marble floor.

“It’s—it’s AI! It’s deepfake technology!” Graham stammered wildly, his voice pitching up an octave in panic. “Somebody hacked my office! This is a malicious, fabricated lie put together by bitter, jealous people who have nothing! Look at her!” He pointed a shaking, accusing finger directly at me, standing near the back of the room with my hand on Lily’s shoulder. “Her sister is a bitter, divorced, impoverished schoolteacher who couldn't stand to see Vanessa happy! They broke into my digital files and generated this fake garbage to ruin our special day!”

A murmur of doubt rippled through the crowd. Deepfakes were common these days, and rich men were always targets of digital extortion. Several guests nodded, looking back and forth between Graham and the screen, willing themselves to believe the excuse because the alternative was too horrifying to contemplate.

Vanessa looked at me, her eyes blazing with blind, furious hatred. For a second, she desperately wanted to believe Graham’s lie because the alternative meant admitting she had been played for a fool by a con man.

“You pathetic, jealous bitch!” Vanessa screamed, abandoning all pretense of bridal etiquette as she started storming toward me down the center aisle. “You couldn't stand that I won! You had to ruin my wedding with your pathetic lies!”

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I simply looked down at my eight-year-old daughter, who calmly reached back into her pale yellow cardigan and pulled out a second, much smaller silver flash drive, holding it up for the entire room to see.
