Chapter 4 - The Grand Unveiling

At 5:55 PM, the front door unlocked. Kevin walked in first, holding his leather briefcase, his forehead creased with annoyance.
“Anna, I really don’t understand why you’re making a fuss about—”
He stopped dead in his tracks.
He didn't even finish stepping out of his shoes. His briefcase slipped from his fingers and hit the hardwood floor with a heavy thud. His jaw dropped, his face draining of all color in a matter of seconds, turning a sickly, ghostly white.
Directly in front of him, dominating the entire sightline of the foyer, stood the six-foot portrait of him and his stepmother in our bed.
“A-Anna...” Kevin stammered, his voice cracking like a terrified child's. “What... what is... how did... what is this?”
Before he could take another breath, the doorbell rang.
I walked past Kevin calmly, opened the front door with a polite smile, and gestured inside. “Welcome, Evelyn. Right this way.”
Evelyn walked in, wearing a tailored cream blazer and holding a designer handbag. “Anna, really, this sudden summons is quite dramatic—”
She stepped into the main hallway, turned her head toward the living room, and froze.
The air in the room seemed to instantly vanish. Evelyn’s refined composure shattered like cheap glass. Her eyes widened in absolute horror as she stared at the massive canvas. Her hands tightened on her handbag until her knuckles turned white, her breathing coming in short, ragged gasps.
“You...” Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling violently as she looked from the portrait to me. “You... painted... you printed this?”
“I felt the small screen on my phone didn't do your hard work justice, Evelyn,” I said, my voice smooth, resonant, and entirely composed as I leaned against the doorframe. “After all, as you texted me yesterday, you wanted me to know who really controls this family. I thought an artwork of this magnitude deserved a prominent place in our home.”
“Kevin!” Evelyn shrieked, turning to her stepson with a sudden surge of panic. “Kevin, do something! Tear it down! Get it out of here!”
Kevin didn't move. He stood frozen, his eyes wide with sheer panic, sweat suddenly glistening along his hairline. “Anna... please... listen to me... this isn't... it’s not what it looks like... it was a mistake... she was comforting me, I was drunk—”
“Comforting you?” I let out a soft, sharp laugh that cut through the room like a razor. “ naked under my sheets? In the bed I bought with my own salary?”
I took a step forward, pulling a thick leather folder from my side table and tossing it onto the glass coffee table right beneath the giant portrait. The folder flew open, scattering dozens of printed bank statements, highlighted wire transfers, and corporate asset reports across the glass.
“Let’s talk about the rest of your mistakes, Kevin,” I said calmly. “Let's talk about the $150,000 you stole from our joint accounts over the last three years to fund Evelyn’s spa trips, her luxury clothes, and her mortgage defaults.”
Evelyn’s face turned from white to a deep, embarrassed crimson. “That... that was family assistance! Arthur’s estate needed—”
“Arthur’s estate is bankrupt because you drained it, Evelyn,” I interrupted, staring directly into her eyes. “And then you moved on to my income. You didn't just want my husband. You wanted my life, my money, and my dignity. But you were too stupid to realize that I kept every single receipt.”
Kevin looked at the financial documents on the table, then up at the towering photo, and finally at me. “Anna... please... we can fix this. We can go to counseling. I’ll give the money back—”
May you like
“You don't have the money to give back, Kevin,” I said coldly. “Because as of four o'clock this afternoon, all joint accounts have been frozen by court order, and my legal team has filed for an immediate emergency asset freeze.”
Silence descended upon the room, thick, suffocating, and absolute.
