Chapter 9 - The Headmaster’s Downfall

Harold Thorne began backing slowly toward the faculty exit.
He didn't make it three steps.
Two uniformed State Troopers stepped behind him, their hands resting firmly on their utility belts.
“Headmaster Thorne,” Governor Carter called out without turning around.
“Where are you going?”
“Governor Carter, I swear on my life, I had no idea about the physical bullying!” Harold squeaked.
“I am an educator! I manage academic operations, not cafeteria skirmishes!”
Eleanor took Emily’s cracked phone from the floor.
She unlocked the screen and pressed play on a recorded audio memo Emily had uploaded to the cloud two weeks earlier.
Harold Thorne’s unmistakable voice echoed through the cafeteria’s sound system:
“Just ride her hard, Brianna. Embarrass her until she breaks. If she leaves on her own accord, her mother won’t have standing to question the board’s financial records. I’ll make sure the monitors look the other way.”
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Harold’s face turned an awful shade of ash gray.
“That was Emily’s calculus classroom recording, Harold,” Eleanor said quietly.
“Under state law, our public-private charter agreement requires dual-party consent for surveillance—unless felony fraud is being actively discussed.”
“You forfeited your immunity the moment you traded state parkland for a luxury yacht slip in Palm Beach.”
Eleanor turned to the troopers behind Harold.
“Arrest him.”
“Charges: wire fraud, conspiracy to commit public corruption, and child endangerment.”
Handcuffs clinked loudly as they ratcheted around Harold Thorne’s wrists.
The students who had spent three years trembling under Thorne’s strict, punitive discipline pulled out their phones.

Dozens of camera shutters clicked simultaneously.
The all-powerful headmaster of Oakridge Academy was marched out of his own cafeteria in iron chains.
