Chapter 15 - The Queen of the Waterfront

Midnight had settled over the Mercer family estate in Chestnut Hill.

The expansive stone mansion sat surrounded by sixty acres of ancient oak trees, high stone walls, and rolling lawns illuminated by soft landscape uplighting.

A warm breeze drifted off the gardens, carrying the fragrance of blooming white hydrangeas and night jasmine.

On the second-floor stone balcony overlooking the valley, Evelyn stood leaning against the balustrade, holding a glass of champagne.

She had taken off her emerald heels, enjoying the cool sensation of the stone beneath her bare feet.

The front doors of the balcony opened, and Adrian stepped outside, carrying a small velvet box in his hand.

He had removed his tuxedo jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and rolled up his white sleeves to the elbows.

He walked across the terrace, stopping beside her, looking out over the peaceful grounds.

"Your mother is asleep in the east wing," Adrian said softly.

"She told me this house is too large for one retired schoolteacher."

"She is used to her cottage in Cape May," Evelyn smiled.

"We will renovate the Cape May cottage next month," Adrian promised.

"She can spend her summers by the ocean and her winters here with us."

Evelyn turned her body toward him, resting her hip against the stone railing.

"You've planned everything, haven't you?"

"I am learning from my Chief Operating Officer," he said, turning fully toward her.

"Risk mitigation, long-term asset security, and succession planning."

Adrian reached into his pocket and brought out the midnight-blue velvet box.

Evelyn’s breath hitched.

The world seemed to pause on its axis.

Adrian did not drop to one knee with theatrical flourish.

He stood before her as her equal, holding the box between his broad, scarred hands, his dark eyes vulnerable and fierce all at once.

"Three years ago, you walked into my office and told me I was financially illiterate," Adrian said, his voice husky with deep emotion.

"You were right."

"I was illiterate in business, and I was illiterate in life."

"I thought survival was about having more ammunition and more fear than the other side."

"You showed me that true strength is built on truth, on discipline, and on protecting the people who stand with you in the fire."

He flipped the box open.

Inside rested a breathtaking, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, flanked by two sapphires that matched the midnight blue of the dress she had worn the night she slapped Preston Hale.

"You took down my enemies," Adrian continued, his fingers gently taking her left hand.

"You saved my company."

"You saved my soul."

"Evelyn Monroe, will you marry me and rule this city by my side?"

Tears welled in Evelyn’s dark eyes, glistening like diamonds in the moonlight.

She looked at the ring, then up into the face of the man who had faced down an army to pull her mother from the river.

The fears, the walls, and the calculated defenses she had maintained for thirty-four years dissolved into pure, unadulterated joy.

She smiled, a radiant, dazzling expression that lit up the night.

"On one condition, Adrian," she whispered playfully through her happy tears.

Adrian chuckled, shaking his head with fond surrender.

"Even now, she negotiates."

"What is your condition, Evie?"

"I maintain fifty-one percent of the voting shares in this marriage."

Adrian laughed, a rich, booming sound that echoed into the warm night air.

He pulled her into his arms, lifting her off the stone floor, his lips meeting hers in a deep, passionate, and triumphant kiss that sealed their shared destiny.

"Deal," Adrian murmured against her lips as he slipped the heavy diamond ring onto her finger.

"Absolute deal."

They stood together on the high stone balcony, overlooking the quiet, shimmering lights of Philadelphia sprawled along the horizon.

The girl whose father had died broken in a cold garage had brought two mafia empires to their knees with a ledger and a single, unforgettable slap.

Beside her stood the reformed king of the docks, proud, unassailable, and utterly devoted.

Together, they owned the night, the river, and the clean dawn of an unbreakable future.
