Chapter 13 - The Ghost of the Moretti Line

Dominic Moretti stepped over the threshold of the grand ballroom.

He wore no tailored suit, no expensive tie, and no polished leather shoes.

He was dressed in a dark tactical sweater torn at the collar, heavy combat trousers, and steel-toed boots.

The gash along his left temple was stitched with coarse black medical thread, surrounded by dark purple bruising.

His eyes were sunken, dark as charcoal, and burned with a terrifying, apocalyptic flame.

In his right hand, he carried a heavy automatic rifle resting casually against his thigh.

Behind him stood Matteo, flanked by eight heavily armed Moretti veterans who had served Dominic’s father for thirty years.

Beside them walked Lorenzo Castiglione, calm, impeccably dressed, flanked by his two most dangerous Brooklyn capos.

The entire assembly of the Five Families froze in sheer, paralyzed astonishment.

Capos scrambled out of their chairs, backing away from the table as if an army of ghosts had entered the room.

"Dominic..." Don Falcone breathed, his ivory cane slipping from his trembling fingers to clatter against the carpet.

Salvatore’s face turned the color of damp parchment.

The linen handkerchief slipped from his fingers, fluttering to the floor like a wounded white bird.

"Dominic, my boy..." Salvatore stammered, stepping back from the throne until his spine struck the velvet drapes.

"You... you survived the docks."

"Thank God... the saints have answered our prayers!"

"Shut your lying mouth, Salvatore," Dominic said, his voice flat, low, and terrifyingly clear.

He did not raise the rifle.

He did not shout.

The deadly quiet of his tone was a thousand times more frightening than any roar of anger.

Dominic stepped into the room, his heavy boots leaving faint traces of hospital antiseptic on the antique rug.

Two of Salvatore’s enforcers raised their carbines toward Dominic’s chest.

Before they could align their sights, Matteo and Lorenzo’s men leveled twelve high-powered rifles directly at their foreheads.

"Drop them," Matteo snarled, "or we paint the chandeliers with your brains."

The two guards looked at Dominic’s terrifying eyes, looked at their fellow soldiers standing with Matteo, and slowly placed their weapons onto the floorboards.

Dominic walked straight to the head of the mahogany table, stopping ten feet from his uncle.

"You were about to vote on my funeral, Uncle," Dominic said softly.

"You were about to crown yourself Don over the ashes of Pier Fourteen."

"Dominic, you misunderstand!" Salvatore cried, his voice trembling as he held up his open palms.

"We thought you were dead!"

"Castiglione attacked you at the docks!"

"Look at him, he is standing right behind you with his Brooklyn thugs!"

"He killed four of our boys!"

Lorenzo Castiglione stepped forward, crossing his arms over his chest with a faint, mocking smile.

"I didn't attack Pier Fourteen, Salvatore."

"The only thing I did last night was pick up Dominic’s wife after your nephew threw her out into the storm."

"Madeline is a traitor!" Salvatore shrieked, looking frantically around the table at the silent capos.

"She sold the routes!"

"She called Castiglione from her bedroom!"

"She is the one who wanted Dominic in the grave!"

Dominic reached into his tactical pocket and pulled out a small digital audio recorder.

He set it down on the center of the mahogany table, right beside the fake silver medallion.

He pressed the black playback button with his thumb.

The static hissed for two seconds before Salvatore’s voice boomed through the ballroom’s high ceilings with crystal clarity.

"...the boy is getting too careless with the federal investigators."

"...When we take Pier Fourteen, we make sure Lorenzo takes the blame."

"...Elena is old. Once Dominic is buried, a small dose of digitalis in her IV line will close the estate."

"...The probate judge in White Plains is already on our payroll. The trust will pass to me within forty-eight hours."

The silence that descended upon the Plaza Hotel ballroom was absolute, suffocating, and profound.

Don Falcone looked at Salvatore with pure, unadulterated disgust.

The Lucchese brothers crossed themselves, shaking their heads in horror.

In the mafia's ancient code, murdering a rival was business; murdering one’s own brother’s family and attempting to poison the matriarch was an unforgivable sin against blood.

"That... that is an artificial recording!" Salvatore screamed, his voice breaking into a panicked shriek.

"Castiglione manufactured that tape using modern technology!"

"It is a fabrication to destroy our family from within!"

The double doors at the entrance swung open once more.

A wheelchair rolled slowly through the entrance, pushed by a uniformed medical attendant.

Sitting in the chair was Donna Elena Moretti.

Her silver hair was pulled back into an elegant knot.

She wore a black wool coat, and across her lap rested a thick blanket covering her frail legs.

Around her neck hung the silver cross that Dominic had given back to her before leaving the surgical facility.

The room held its collective breath.

The entire Five Families council stood up out of instinctual, ancient respect for the widow of the late Don.

Donna Elena raised her right hand, her fingers trembling but her dark eyes burning with fierce, regal fury.

"It was not a fabrication, Salvatore," Donna Elena spoke, her frail voice cutting through the ballroom like an iron decree.

"Geno stood at the foot of my bed in Westchester three hours ago holding a syringe full of digitalis."

"He had four of your shooters with him."

"They shot my bedroom to pieces."

"They would have buried me before sunrise, Salvatore, just like you planned."

Salvatore fell against the velvet drapes, his chest heaving, his legs buckling beneath him.

"Elena..." he wept, sliding down the wall.

"Elena, they are lying to you..."

"Madeline saved my life," Donna Elena declared, turning her head to address every boss at the table.

"My daughter-in-law Madeline walked into that slaughterhouse alone."

"When your dogs opened fire on an old woman, Madeline threw her body across my chest."

"She took five bullets for me, Salvatore."

"Five bullets that you paid for with the money you stole from my husband’s foundation."

Donna Elena looked down at her nephew Dominic, tears filling her aged eyes.

"She is lying in a cold surgical bunker right now, fighting for every single breath."

"And my son is standing here to execute the judgment of the Moretti bloodline."

Dominic slowly raised the heavy rifle, pointing the barrel straight between his uncle’s panicked eyes.
