Chapter 7 - Restoring The Garden And Reclaiming My Life

It took three days for the legal dust to settle, during which Calvin was formally charged and denied bail due to flight risk, while Tabitha fled the city, abandoning her apartment and her social circle in sheer humiliation. Kyle packed his bags and moved into a cheap motel on the outskirts of town, sending me a long, rambling letter of remorse that I left unopened on the kitchen counter.

I didn't need to read it. My father had left me peace, and I intended to keep it.

On a bright Saturday morning exactly one week after Tabitha's arrogant intrusion, I stood out in the front garden with a pair of clean pruning shears in my hand. The soil was damp from an overnight rain, smelling of rich earth and blooming life.

The white rose bushes my father had planted on my wedding day stood tall and proud. A few petals had been bruised during Tabitha's visit, but the stems were strong, deep-rooted, and thriving.

I knelt down in the dirt, ignoring the mud that stained the knees of my jeans, and began to carefully trim away the dead leaves and thorns. Just as my father had taught me: with a steady hand, but never hurting the plant.

As I worked, I remembered the final lines of the letter my father had hidden beneath the rosebed—words he had written during his final, painful weeks of life, knowing exactly who I was and who they were:

“My dearest Paige, people who build their lives on vanity and deceit are like cut flowers in a vase—they look bright for a moment, but they have no roots. They wither quickly, and when they die, they are simply thrown away. But you, my daughter, are a tree planted by living water. Your roots go deep into the truth. No matter who tries to uproot you, you will stand.”

A tear slipped down my cheek, landing softly on a pristine white petal. I wiped it away with the back of my hand, smiling through the mist in my eyes.

The house was mine. The legacy was safe. The vultures were gone.

And the white roses were blooming brighter than ever.
