Chapter 10 - THE FINAL ARRAIGNMENT

The Federal District Courthouse on Thursday morning was a fortress of limestone and bulletproof glass, surrounded by a thick wall of media vans and satellite trucks broadcasting live updates to screens across the country.
I arrived with Arthur Sterling and Agent Miller just before ten o’clock, walking through the metal detectors and up the grand marble staircase toward Courtroom 4B, where Magistrate Judge Thomas was scheduled to preside over Richard’s formal arraignment.
Inside the courtroom, the gallery was packed with reporters, financial analysts, and corporate executives eager to witness the final collapse of one of the city’s most prominent rising stars.
Richard was led in through the secure side door by two federal marshals, wearing a standard orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame, his hair uncombed and his face bearing the faint, yellowish bruising from Arthur’s punch inside the chapel four days earlier.
He didn’t look up as he was guided to the defense table, but as he sat down between two public defenders who looked thoroughly exhausted before the hearing even began, his eyes swept across the gallery and locked directly onto mine in the front row.
There was no arrogance left in his expression, no cold calculation, only a dull, hollow desperation that begged for something—anything—to reset the clock to six weeks prior when he had stood on the edge of the Route 9 ravine.
Judge Thomas adjusted his glasses, scanning the thick indictment folder resting on the mahogany bench before looking down at the defendant with severe, unblinking eyes.
“Mr. Vance,” Judge Thomas said, his deep, resonant voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “You stand charged under federal indictment on four counts of wire fraud, two counts of interstate transport of stolen funds, and one count of attempted second-degree homicide. How do you plead?”
Richard’s lead public defender stood up quickly, clearing his throat before speaking into the microphone. “Your Honor, at this time, the defense enters a plea of not guilty on all counts, though we are prepared to discuss terms for a cooperative guilty plea regarding the financial charges in exchange for dropping the homicide—”
“Not guilty?” Judge Thomas interrupted, his voice dropping an octave as he flipped open the second volume of the indictment report. “Counsel, I have reviewed the initial evidentiary disclosures provided by the United States Attorney’s office, including high-definition dashcam footage, certified hospital recovery logs, and three million dollars in undisputed wire transfers routed through offshore accounts under your client’s direct control.”
The public defender swallowed hard, looking sideways at Richard, who was staring blankly down at the wooden table. “Your Honor, we understand the state’s evidence is substantial, but—”

“The evidence is airtight, Counselor,” Judge Thomas corrected firmly. “Furthermore, given the severity of the violent felony charges and the clear evidence of flight risk and witness intimidation, bail is officially denied without the right of appeal.”
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery as the gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack that signaled the definitive end of Richard’s empire.
