Chapter 2

I didn't move for what felt like an eternity.

Lily's words hung in the air, sharp and heavy.

No hurt Toby.

I opened my arms and she ran into them, her small body shaking against my chest. Toby followed, collapsing against my side, sobbing so hard he could barely breathe. I held them both, my own heart hammering against my ribs, trying to make sense of what I'd just heard and what my children were trying to tell me.

The whispers from the dining room stopped.

Silence.

Then the sound of a chair scraping against the floor.

Footsteps approaching.

I stood up, keeping both children behind me, my body instinctively shielding them. Evelyn appeared in the archway, her face transforming from calculation to concern in less than a second. Marcus stood behind her, his jaw tight, eyes darting between me and the children.

"Daniel! You're home early," Evelyn said, her voice sickeningly sweet. "Is everything all right at the office?"

I stared at her.

The woman who'd brought me soup when Clara was sick.

The woman who'd promised to help me raise my children.

The woman who was stealing from them.

"What's going on here?" I asked, my voice low and dangerous.

Evelyn's smile faltered for just a moment before she recovered. "Oh, Marcus and I were just discussing... some household finances. Nothing for you to worry about, dear. You have enough on your plate."

"Household finances?" I stepped forward, and she flinched. "You were talking about a second account. About Clara's estate. About stealing from my children."

Marcus laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. "Stealing? Please. That money is as much ours as it is theirs. Your father—"

"My father is dead," I cut him off. "And Clara's estate was left to Toby and Lily. Not you. Not your mother. Them."

Evelyn's mask finally cracked. Her eyes narrowed, and for the first time, I saw the real woman beneath the pastel cardigans and polite smiles. Cold. Greedy. Ruthless.

"You don't understand, Daniel," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous purr. "Your father... he promised me security. I took care of him for years. I deserve something for my loyalty."

"You took care of yourself," I said. "And you used my grief to do it."

I looked down at my children. Lily was clutching my leg, her face buried in my jeans. Toby was staring at Marcus with a look of pure terror in his eyes.

"What happened?" I asked Toby, my voice softening. "What did he do to you?"

Toby's lower lip trembled. He looked at Marcus, then quickly looked away, shaking his head.

"I... I can't," he whispered.

Marcus stepped forward, and both children flinched.

"Nothing happened," Marcus said, his voice menacing. "The boy just had a nightmare. That's all. Tell him, Toby. Tell your daddy it was just a bad dream."

Toby's eyes filled with fresh tears. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

I felt a rage rise in me that I'd never felt before. Not even when Clara was dying and I was powerless to save her. This was different. This was someone hurting my children, and I had the power to stop it.

"Get out," I said, my voice cold and steady.

Evelyn blinked. "Excuse me?"

"Get out of my house," I repeated. "Both of you. Tonight. Now."

"You can't do that," Marcus sneered. "We have rights. We've been living here—"

"You have no rights here," I said. "This is my home. My children's home. And you're not welcome anymore. I'll give you thirty minutes to pack your things and leave. If you're not gone by then, I'm calling the police."

Evelyn's face twisted with anger. "You'll regret this, Daniel. You think you can survive without me? You can barely take care of yourself, let alone two children. You need me."

"I don't need anyone who hurts my children," I said. "Now go."

They stared at me for a long moment, then turned and walked back toward the guest wing. I heard the door slam.

I knelt down again, pulling my children into a tight embrace.

"You're safe now," I whispered. "Daddy's here. Nothing bad is going to happen to you ever again."

Lily looked up at me, her eyes still wet with tears.

"Promise?" she asked, her tiny voice barely audible.

I kissed her forehead.

"I promise."

But as I held my shaking children, I knew the nightmare was far from over.

May you like

I'd caught them in the act, but I had no idea how deep the betrayal went.

Or how far they'd go to keep what they'd stolen.
