Chapter 2 - The Paper Kingdom

The next morning, the office of Mercer Technologies felt like a funeral home for a ghost. Melissa Grant, Daniel’s long-time assistant, looked pale as she approached his desk. She knew more than she let on; she had seen the invoices, the "consulting fees," and the suspicious wire transfers to Ashley’s brother.

"Sir," Melissa said, her voice trembling as she placed the legal notice on his mahogany desk. "Claire has filed for divorce. And the board… the board has been notified of the original shareholder agreement."

Daniel laughed, a sharp, dismissive sound. "She’s bluffing. She has no power. I restructured that company years ago."

"She didn't sign the restructuring documents, sir," Melissa replied, not flinching. "The board has confirmed that Claire owns forty-eight percent of the company. And since your voting rights are tied to the original agreement… you’ve just been suspended."

The color drained from Daniel’s face. He looked at the document, his hands shaking. He had spent years gaslighting me, showing me fake summaries, telling me my ownership was diluted. He assumed I was too distracted by motherhood to check the fine print.

He lunged for his phone, his face contorting into a mask of rage. He called the board members, his lawyers, and finally, my personal number.

I sat in my sister’s sunroom, watching Noah play in the garden. When the phone rang, I let it go to voicemail. He wasn't calling to apologize; he was calling to negotiate his survival. He didn't understand that for me, this was no longer a marriage. It was a hostile takeover.
