Chapter 4 - Breach in the Glass Fortress

The flashing crimson alarm cast a harsh, rhythmic glow across the pristine white walls of the penthouse. Julian was already moving, his weapon raised, gliding toward the private elevator with the lethal grace of a predator.

"Stay away from the windows," Vulov ordered sharply, his voice cutting through the whining hum of the security system. He didn't panic; instead, he stepped smoothly between Clare and the glass facade, pulling a heavy-caliber firearm from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket.

"What is happening?" Clare whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "How did anyone get past the lobby security?"

"They didn't," Vulov replied, his eyes fixed on the reinforced steel door of the elevator shaft. "They bypassed the master grid using an override frequency. Which means someone inside my own organization just sold us out."

Before the words had even finished echoing in the room, the elevator doors groaned, the hydraulic brakes hissing as they pried open from the inside. Two armed men in black tactical gear spilled out into the foyer, weapons raised and sweeping the room.

Julian fired twice with terrifying precision. The first intruder dropped instantly, a muffled thud shaking the hardwood floor, while the second scrambled back toward the elevator alcove, returning blind, erratic fire that shattered a decorative vase near the entrance.

Vulov shoved Clare behind a heavy marble pillar. "Stay down! Do not move!"

The firefight was deafening in the confined space of the penthouse, the sharp cracks of suppressed gunfire blending with the shattering of expensive glass and splintering wood. Julian advanced with calculated brutality, rounding the corner of the hallway and neutralizing the second attacker with a clean shot to the shoulder before kicking him to the ground and disarming him.

"Clear!" Julian called out, his voice entirely steady despite the adrenaline pumping through the room.

Vulov holstered his weapon and walked over to the groaning intruder pinned beneath Julian’s boot. He crouched down, grabbing the man by his tactical vest and dragging him up until their faces were inches apart.

"Who sent you?" Vulov asked, his voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying a lethality that made Clare shudder from behind her pillar.

The intruder spat a mouthful of blood onto the pristine floor, laughing wetly. "You think... you think Thorne was the only one? The board... the board wants the chemist. The girl dies tonight, Vulov. Your empire bleeds tomorrow."

Julian pressed his boot harder against the man's chest, cutting off his labored breathing, but Vulov raised a hand to stop him. He stood up slowly, wiping a speck of dust from his sleeve as his gray eyes darkened into a terrifying storm.

"It wasn't a rival syndicate," Vulov muttered to himself, the pieces clicking together with chilling clarity. "It was internal. Someone on my own executive council gave them the override codes."

Clare stepped out from behind the pillar, her face pale but her eyes blazing with a sudden, fierce realization. "It wasn't just about the chemical formula, was it? Thorne wasn't just running a scam—he was testing your security response. They wanted to see how fast your perimeter would fail if someone inside the inner circle turned."

Vulov turned his head slowly, looking at her with a new level of respect. "And you deduced that while bullets were flying."

"I’m a scientist," Clare said, her voice steadying as the adrenaline leveled out into cold logic. "When an experiment goes wrong, you don't just look at the explosion; you look at the contamination in the baseline. If your own council is compromised, keeping me hidden in this penthouse is suicide. They know where I am now."

Vulov walked over to the master control console embedded in the wall, tapping a sequence that brought up a live schematic of the building’s subterranean exits. "Which means we leave. Now."
