Chapter 9 - The New CEO and the First Board Meeting under Apex Equity

The polished mahogany boardroom on the forty-third floor of Prescott Global looked entirely different.
The heavy, oppressive atmosphere of tension, fear, and corporate panic that had defined the Aaron Prescott era was entirely gone.
Instead, the room was filled with quiet, focused professionalism.
The massive leather chair at the head of the table—once occupied by a man who believed his last name made him untouchable—was now occupied by a sleek, modern leather-and-chrome executive seat.
I sat at the center of that seat, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy-blue pantsuit, my hair pulled back into a clean, elegant bun.
To my right sat Nathan Brooks, serving as general counsel for Apex Equity Holdings.
To my left sat Arthur Sterling, the elderly patriarch of the board, who looked younger and more energized than he had in a decade.
Around the table sat the remaining twelve members of the board of directors.
Every single pair of eyes was locked onto me with a mixture of profound respect, cautious awe, and absolute compliance.
“Good morning, everyone,” I said, my voice clear, steady, and echoing softly off the glass walls of the high-rise.
“Let us call this special session of the newly restructured Apex-Prescott board to order.”
Arthur Sterling nodded approvingly, adjusting his glasses.
“Thank you, Madam Chair,” Arthur said, his voice carrying across the silent room.
“Before we review the quarterly financial reports, I believe we have several procedural resolutions regarding the executive leadership transition.”
“Proceed, Arthur,” I instructed, resting my hands flat on the polished mahogany surface.
“Resolution one,” Arthur announced, reading from a crisp document.
“To officially retire the title and position of Chief Executive Officer previously held by Aaron Sterling Prescott, and to permanently sever all operational, financial, and familial ties between the Prescott family trust and the daily management of this corporation.”
He paused, looking around the table.
“All in favor?”
Every single hand around the table shot up immediately.
Not a single voice dissented.
The legacy Aaron had inherited, abused, and nearly destroyed was now completely, legally dismantled.
“Resolution two,” Arthur continued, turning the page.
“To appoint Claire Prescott as President and Chief Executive Officer of Apex-Prescott Global, with full voting rights and executive veto power across all domestic and international subsidiaries.”
Again, every hand went up instantly.
I didn't smile smugly. I didn't gloat.
I simply nodded, accepting the heavy mantle of leadership not as a prize, but as a responsibility.
“Thank you,” I said quietly when the vote was recorded.
“Let me be clear about one thing moving forward. Under the previous administration, this company was run on smoke, mirrors, and reckless executive ego. Personal agendas were funded by corporate assets, and accountability was treated like an optional suggestion.”
I paused, letting my gaze sweep slowly across every director sitting at the table.
“That culture ends today. Apex-Prescott Global will operate with absolute financial transparency, ethical integrity, and rigorous professional standards. If anyone in this room believes they can operate outside those boundaries, I suggest you resign by the end of this meeting. Because unlike my predecessor, I check the books myself.”
A heavy, respectful silence settled over the room.

Even the most cynical board members realized right then and there that the quiet, ignored housewife they had occasionally seen standing politely in the background at corporate galas was gone forever.
In her place stood a corporate titan who had engineered one of the most brilliant, bloodless corporate takeovers in modern Boston history.
