Chapter 8 - The Interrogation in the Lower Vault and Marcone’s Ultimatum

By 3:00 AM, the reinforced interrogation cells in the lower vaults of the Brookline estate were echoing with the cold, rhythmic drip of condensation and the heavy silence of absolute defeat.

Tied securely to a bolted steel chair beneath the harsh glare of a single overhead tungsten bulb sat Leo Vance—no relation to Arthur—a senior logistics enforcer dispatched directly from Frank Marcone’s inner circle in Brooklyn.

His tailored suit was wrinkled and stained with road grime, his lip split from the swift takedown on Route 93, and his eyes darting nervously toward the dark shadows where Gideon Vitali stood silently watching.

Clara Holt stood beside Gideon, holding an open manifest detailing the crates seized from the back of the Apex Logistics truck.

“Seventeen containers of synthetic organophosphate precursor,” Clara read aloud, her voice echoing off the concrete walls.

“Enough to keep a metropolis blind for a decade, or to paralyze every key stakeholder on the Boston waterfront board before the autumn quorum.”

Leo Vance forced a bitter, defiant laugh, spitting a drop of blood onto the concrete floor.

“You think stopping one truck changes anything, Vitali?” Leo sneered, looking directly at Gideon through the harsh light.

“Marcone knows about your little cleanup operation. By sunrise, every dock worker, union boss, and city councilman in Boston will know you’re running a paranoid witch hunt.”

Gideon stepped forward out of the shadows.

His movements were smooth, deliberate, and carried an absolute, crushing authority that made the Brooklyn enforcer instinctively shrink back in his chair.

“Let them talk,” Gideon said softly, his voice cutting like a razor.

“Because when Marcone wakes up tomorrow morning, he’s going to find something far more interesting in his private inbox than rumors.”

Leo frowned.

“What are you talking about?”

Clara stepped forward, holding out a secure tablet displaying a live video feed connected to the offshore bank accounts Dominic Rossi and Frank Marcone had shared.

“We didn't just seize the chemical precursors tonight, Leo,” Clara explained with a clinical, chilling smile.

“While your men were arguing with Arthur Vance on the highway, our financial strike team wiped out every single shell company account holding your syndicate’s operational capital in the Caymans and Zurich.”

Leo’s face went instantly pale.

“You... you hacked the offshore ledgers?”

“We didn't hack anything,” Gideon corrected, leaning down slightly so his face was inches from the terrified enforcer.

“We simply reclaimed what was stolen from my family’s ledgers over the last six months, with a substantial administrative fee attached for the trouble.”

Gideon straightened up, gesturing dismissively to the guards standing near the cell door.

“Send him back to Brooklyn on the first morning train,” Gideon ordered.

“And make sure he delivers a message to Frank Marcone for me.”

“What—what message?” Leo stammered, panic finally breaking his tough-guy exterior.

“Tell him that Boston is closed for business,” Gideon said coldly.

“And if he ever tries to turn out the lights in my house again, I won't just take his money—I’ll take his city.”
