Chapter 13 - The Drowning of the Vipers

The Castiglione gunmen were entirely disoriented, spinning in circles with their weapons raised, unable to find a single human target to shoot at.

They were trapped in a steel pit measuring roughly two hundred feet across, walled in by thousands of tons of immovable cargo containers.

Up in the crane control cabin, Gabriel tapped a specific command key on Rose’s console.

He had not brought his men here to engage in a messy, unpredictable firefight that could cost Thorne lives.

He had brought them here to execute an extermination.

Along the upper ridges of the container walls, fifty Thorne enforcers stepped out from the shadows, their silhouettes stark black against the blinding floodlights.

They did not carry standard rifles.

They carried heavy, high-pressure industrial hoses connected directly to the harbor’s emergency fire-suppression reservoir.

“Open the valves,” Gabriel ordered calmly into his headset.

Fifty heavy brass nozzles were cranked open simultaneously.

A colossal, deafening roar tore through the dockyard as thousands of gallons of freezing, high-velocity seawater blasted down into the steel pit.

The sheer kinetic force of the water was devastating.

It slammed into the Castiglione men like a solid wall of concrete, knocking them off their feet, ripping the weapons from their hands, and hurling them against the corrugated steel walls of the containers.

Vincent Castiglione shrieked as a blast of icy water caught him squarely in the chest, throwing him backward over the hood of an armored truck.

His splinted hand smashed against the reinforced windshield, shattering the bone completely.

The water level inside the sealed container perimeter began to rise with terrifying speed.

Because Rose had positioned the containers to interlock perfectly, the steel walls acted like a watertight dam, trapping the deluge inside the kill box.

Within three minutes, the freezing water was waist-deep and churning like a violent maelstrom.

The heavily armed gangsters were now fighting simply to keep their heads above the freezing, oil-slicked surface.

Their heavy Kevlar vests and tactical boots, designed to stop bullets, became massive anchors dragging them beneath the dark water.

Men thrashed wildly, screaming for help, climbing over each other in a desperate, animalistic panic to survive.

Don Salvatore struggled to climb onto the roof of one of his submerged transport trucks, his expensive wool coat soaked and weighing him down like lead.

He was coughing violently, his lungs burning with the freezing brine, his legendary authority entirely shattered.

He watched in horror as his elite strike force was neutralized without the Thorne syndicate firing a single bullet.

Up in the cabin, Rose watched the infrared monitors with cold, analytical detachment.

She did not feel a shred of pity for the men drowning below.

These were the same men who had planned to butcher Gabriel in his sleep, the same men who had terrorized her father into trading her life for a gambling debt.

They were monsters, and they were dying exactly as they deserved.

“The water level has reached six feet, Boss,” Cole’s voice crackled over the radio.

“Most of them have dropped their weapons and are holding onto the trucks.”

“Should we keep pouring?”

Gabriel looked down at Rose, letting her make the final call on her own territory.

“Cut the water,” Rose commanded into the microphone, her voice steady and absolute.

The roaring deluge ceased instantly, replaced by the pathetic, echoing sounds of sixty men coughing, weeping, and shivering violently in the freezing, chest-deep pool.

“Bring the lights down to fifty percent,” Rose ordered.

“And send the boarding ramps.”

From the top of the container walls, heavy steel boarding ramps were slowly lowered by chains until they hovered just above the surface of the trapped water.

Gabriel placed his hand on the small of Rose’s back.

“Let us go down and accept their surrender, Mrs. Thorne,” Gabriel murmured, a dark smile playing on his lips.

They descended from the crane cabin via a secure exterior elevator, stepping out onto the reinforced steel gangway that ringed the top of the container wall.

They stood looking down into the pit, framed by the remaining floodlights like gods of the underworld passing judgment on the damned.

Don Salvatore looked up from the roof of his submerged truck, his face pale, his lips blue from the freezing water.

He was shivering uncontrollably, completely stripped of his terrifying aura.

“You... you coward!” Salvatore choked out, pointing a trembling finger up at Gabriel.

“Fight me face to face!”

Gabriel laughed, a low, dark sound that carried easily across the still water.

“You brought sixty men in armored trucks to steal from my wife in the middle of the night, Salvatore,” Gabriel replied, his voice echoing with absolute supremacy.

“You lost the right to a fair fight the moment you tried to bypass me and use Richard Vance as a trojan horse.”

Rose stepped forward, resting her hands on the iron railing of the gangway.

“You have two choices, Don Salvatore,” Rose said, her voice cutting through the freezing air like a surgical scalpel.

“Choice one: We turn the water back on, seal the perimeter, and let you and your entire crew drown in this freezing pit.”

“Your bodies will be shipped to Shanghai in a sealed cargo container by sunrise.”

Salvatore swallowed hard, looking around at his freezing, defeated men who were desperately clinging to debris.

“What is choice two?” Salvatore rasped, his pride shattering into a million pieces.

“Choice two is complete capitulation,” Rose stated, her eyes flashing with lethal authority.

“You will order your men to strip off their tactical gear, leave every weapon in the water, and walk up the ramps one by one.”

“My men will zip-tie them and transport them to the Brooklyn precinct with anonymous files detailing their involvement in illegal arms trafficking.”

“And you?” Salvatore asked, his eyes darting wildly.

“What happens to me and Vincent?”

“You and your son are going to sign a document officially transferring ownership of the Castiglione lending networks, your underground casinos, and your Brooklyn real estate directly to the Thorne syndicate,” Gabriel answered smoothly.

“Once the ink is dry, you will be permitted to walk away.”

“Alive, but completely broke.”

“You will be exactly like Richard Vance.”

Vincent let out a pathetic, bubbling sob from the water below.

“Do it, Papa!” Vincent wept, clutching his shattered hand to his chest.

“We’re going to freeze to death!”

Salvatore looked up at the man and woman standing above him, realizing with absolute clarity that the era of the Castiglione family was over.

They had not just been defeated in a gunfight.

They had been intellectually, strategically, and utterly annihilated by a runaway bride and the monster who loved her.

Salvatore slowly raised his empty hands into the air, bowing his heavy head in complete surrender.

“We agree to your terms,” Salvatore whispered, the words sounding like ashes in his mouth.
