Chapter 3 - The Silver-Spoon Machine

At St. Jude Private Pavilion, Daniel Mercer sat in an ergonomic leather recliner while an orthopedic surgeon wrapped an elastic brace around his right wrist.
The room was private, appointed with mahogany paneling and fresh lilies, completely disconnected from the chaotic reality of a public emergency room.
The door swung open with authority, revealing a woman in an impeccably tailored charcoal cashmere coat.
Eleanor Mercer looked fifty-five despite being seventy, her face frozen in an expression of perpetual, aristocratic judgment.
Behind her stood Julian Croft, the family's senior legal fixer, carrying a slim leather portfolio and two encrypted tablets.
Eleanor did not ask her son how much pain he was experiencing.
She walked straight to the edge of the medical recliner, looked down at his bandaged wrist, and struck the side of the armrest with her leather glove.
"You are an absolute fool, Daniel."
Daniel flinched, his face burning with deep crimson embarrassment.
"She attacked me without warning, Mother."
"Do not insult my intelligence with the fairy tale you fed the desk sergeant," Eleanor snapped, her voice like cracking ice.
"You raised your hand to a woman whose father trained the entire tactical division of the state police for two decades."
"Did you genuinely believe she would cower in a corner like a terrified debutante?"
Julian Croft stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles with clinical detachment.
"The immediate concern is not Daniel's tactical incompetence, Eleanor."
"The concern is the solid-state drive that Claire took from the penthouse safe."
Daniel's eyes widened with genuine panic as he looked up at the lawyer.
"She took the auxiliary drive?"
"She extracted it before she threw you onto the floor," Julian replied smoothly.
"Which means she currently possesses the un-redacted Vance settlement files, the medical records, and the financial tracking logs."
Eleanor turned her back on her son, walking toward the wide window overlooking the rainy boulevard below.
"If those files reach the regulatory board before next month’s public offering, our municipal underwriting contract is terminated."
"Forty million dollars in capitalization will vanish overnight because my son cannot control his temper in his own kitchen."
"What do you want me to do, Julian?" Daniel muttered, staring at the floor.
"I want you to keep your mouth shut and let the machine do what it was designed to do," Julian answered.
The attorney opened his tablet and began issuing rapid, pre-planned operational commands.
"First, I have already contacted the municipal bank's vice president."
"Claire's name has been flagged for suspicious financial activity under the emergency spousal authority clause."
"Her credit cards are frozen, her personal checking account has a administrative block, and her vehicle registration is flagged for corporate repossession."
"Second, her boutique interior design firm will receive an unannounced building code audit at eight o'clock this morning."
"Three commercial clients have already been contacted by our intermediaries and advised to suspend their retainers due to Claire's impending legal scandal."
"Third, we have planted a narrative with the city's premier society columnist."
"By six in the morning, the headline will state that Claire Bennett suffered an acute manic episode, assaulted her husband, and fled with corporate assets."
Daniel smiled faintly, the vindictive pleasure returning to his bruised ego.
"And the police warrant?"
"The magistrate is our personal golf partner," Julian said calmly.
"The emergency protective order and the seventy-two-hour psychiatric evaluation warrant will be signed by five o'clock."
"When the police take her into custody, she will be placed in a private psychiatric facility under clinical observation."
"Any statement she makes regarding past files will be dismissed as paranoid delusions resulting from an acute psychotic break."
Eleanor turned back around, her cold blue eyes locking onto Daniel with merciless clarity.
"This is the final time I clean up your disgusting messes, Daniel."
"Once Claire is locked inside the clinical facility and signs the full surrender of her claims, you will file for an uncontested divorce."
"And if you ever touch another woman without Julian securing an airtight non-disclosure agreement first, I will disinherit you from Mercer Holdings entirely."
Daniel swallowed hard, nodding in submissive agreement.
Meanwhile, across town at Bennett’s Academy, the first blow of the Mercer machine struck my phone.
A text notification chimed on the screen: Your primary debit card ending in 4102 has been suspended due to suspected fraudulent activity.
Ten seconds later, a second notification arrived: Access to Bennett Architectural Interiors portal has been restricted by administrative host.
I looked at the glowing screen, feeling the cold, deliberate walls closing in around my life.
They were stripping away my money, my reputation, and my livelihood before the sun had even risen.
Frank walked over, set a steaming mug of black coffee in front of me, and dropped a heavy steel box onto the desk.
He opened the latch, revealing twenty thousand dollars in neat, banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills, alongside three burner phones and an encrypted USB drive.
"They think power is defined by bank accounts and social club connections," Frank said, his voice completely calm.
"They don't understand that when you try to starve out an investigator, you only make them work faster."
"They froze my entire life in twenty minutes, Dad," I said, looking at the dead accounts on my phone.
"Let them play their financial games," Frank replied, pulling his leather holster from the drawer.

"Money only works when you have the legal high ground to protect it."
"We are going to find Melissa Vance, and we are going to burn Daniel Mercer's empire to the ground."
