Chapter 12 - The Night Before the Storm

Midnight descended upon Kane Manor like a shroud of black velvet.

The massive estate was unnaturally quiet, save for the occasional moan of wind whistling through the high stone chimneys.

Rose had been given the guest suite directly across the corridor from Alexander’s north tower chambers.

It was a luxurious room draped in heavy emerald velvet and warm mahogany wood, featuring a plush four-poster bed that felt entirely too large for someone who had spent her life sharing cramped apartments in Queens.

She couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the shattering of crystal against the west wing floor and Richard Kane’s silken voice whispering her name in the dark corridor.

She pushed back the heavy down comforter and slipped out of bed.

She wore a simple silk robe over her nightgown, her bare feet making no sound against the thick wool rug.

She walked out into the private hallway.

The north tower was illuminated only by the faint amber glow of emergency floor lamps.

As she passed the open doorway of Alexander’s study, she saw a single strip of light cutting across the dark hardwood floor.

She paused, stepping closer to the threshold.

Alexander was still awake.

He had removed his suit jacket and tie; his white shirt was open at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to reveal the dark ink stretching across his forearm.

He was standing by his desk, staring down at an old, framed black-and-white photograph.

Rose stepped quietly into the room, stopping a few feet away.

“You should be resting, Mr. Kane,” she murmured softly.

Alexander didn't jump.

He didn't even look startled.

He simply lowered the photograph onto the desk and turned his head to look at her.

In the quiet intimacy of the midnight hour, the CEO of Kane Global looked profoundly human.

The armor was gone, replaced by the deep, quiet sorrow of a boy who had lost his parents at an age when he still needed them most.

“I tried to remember my mother’s voice today,” Alexander said quietly, his voice raspy and low.

“For ten years, I’ve replayed every memory I have of them.”

“Every holiday, every summer in the Alps.”

“And suddenly, tonight, her voice started to blur in my head.”

Rose felt a pang of deep, aching empathy.

Without overthinking it, she stepped across the remaining distance between them.

She reached out and placed her hand gently over his broad forearm, right above the dark ink of his tattoo.

Alexander looked down at her hand, then up into her eyes.

The dark storm in his gray gaze softened, replaced by a sudden, fierce wave of emotion.

He didn't hesitate.

He reached up with his free hand, his fingers cupping the side of her face with breathtaking gentleness.

His thumb brushed lightly across her cheekbone, tracing the curve of her jawline.

Rose’s breath hitched in her throat.

The air between them suddenly felt charged, heavy with an electric intimacy that had been building quietly beneath the terror and the blood ever since they collided in that hallway two nights ago.

“Rose,” he whispered, his voice a gravelly caress against the quiet room.

“You walked into this lions' den eleven days ago as a stranger.”

“And now... you are the only person in this entire world who truly knows who I am.”

“I’m not a stranger anymore, Alexander,” Rose whispered back, her heart racing as she looked up into his intense, brooding eyes.

Alexander leaned down slowly, closing the microscopic distance between them.

When his lips met hers, the kiss wasn't rushed or desperate.

It was deep, deliberate, and warm—a quiet anchor amidst the violent storm of their lives.

Rose’s hand slid up his forearm, resting against his broad shoulder as she leaned into his embrace, letting the warmth of him wash away the cold memories of her past.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead gently against hers, the shadows in the room seemed a little less menacing.

“Tomorrow,” Alexander murmured against her lips, his voice laced with absolute conviction.

“Tomorrow, we take it all back.”
