Chapter 8 - The Fortification Of The Harrington Estate And The Midnight Meeting

By mid-afternoon, the Harrington estate had been transformed from a luxurious Fairfield County sanctuary into an armed military outpost.
Through the tall French windows of the ground-floor drawing room, I watched as Kai’s security detail—now doubled in size and outfitted in heavy tactical gear—patrolled the snowy perimeter walls, stringing razor wire along the iron spikes and positioning automated thermal surveillance cameras among the boxwood hedges.
Inside, the mansion was a hive of quiet, urgent activity.
Arthur moved through the hallways with practiced efficiency, locking down internal security bulkheads, inventorying encrypted communication devices, and securing the master panic room located behind the library’s revolving bookshelf.
I sat on the edge of a velvet armchair in the study, watching Lily play a quiet game of checkers with herself on the Persian rug while Chloe—the young archivist who had arrived at our door weeks ago—busied herself organizing digital backup files on a secure laptop near the fireplace.
The door to the study swung open, and Kai walked in.
He had changed into a tailored charcoal suit, the jacket open, revealing the heavy leather shoulder holster and the sleek black grip of his Beretta tucked neatly beneath his arm.
“Status report?” Kai asked, walking over to stand behind Chloe’s chair.
“The encrypted servers are completely scrubbed,” Chloe reported without looking up from the screen, her fingers flying across the keyboard with blurring speed. “If Salvatore’s tech guys try to ping our location through the regional fiber-optic grid, they’ll hit a dead-end loop pointing straight to an abandoned warehouse in downtown Boston.”
“Good,” Kai murmured, resting a hand on the back of the chair. He looked over at Lily, who was busy crowning a red checker piece with intense, youthful concentration.
“Bug,” Kai called out softly.
Lily looked up, her big brown eyes flashing with excitement. “Yes, Mr. Kai?”
“How would you feel about having your birthday party right here in the big study tomorrow afternoon?” Kai asked, a genuine, soft smile breaking across his hardened face. “We can order three chocolate cakes, set up a badminton net in the indoor atrium, and invite all the imaginary friends you want.”
Lily gasped, dropping her checker piece onto the rug.
“Really? Inside the castle? Can we have rainbow sprinkles too?”
“As many rainbow sprinkles as money can buy,” Kai promised, walking over and crouching down to pat her head.
I watched them from the armchair, feeling a strange, overwhelming tightness in my chest.
This man—the most feared mafia boss in New England, a man who had spent fifteen years drowning his grief in blood and vengeance—was bending over backward to give my daughter a normal birthday in the middle of a cartel war zone.
When Lily returned to her game, Kai stood up and walked over to me, gesturing with a tilt of his head toward the hallway.
I stood silently, following him out of the study and down the wood-paneled corridor until we reached a quiet, secluded alcove overlooking the frozen winter gardens.
“You’re setting a trap for Salvatore, aren't you?” I whispered, keeping my voice low so it wouldn't carry back to the room.
Kai leaned his back against the mahogany wall, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Salvatore thinks I’m vulnerable because I have you and Lily here,” Kai said, his voice cold and calculating. “He thinks I’m distracted by family. He’s going to make a move tonight. While everyone is focused on the perimeter guards, he’ll try to breach the house directly.”
“And you’re going to let him?” I hissed, grabbing his sleeve in panic. “Kai, my daughter is in this house! We are not bait!”
“You’re not bait, Maya—you’re the anvil,” Kai said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unyielding intensity. “If we don't end this tonight, Salvatore will hunt us down for the rest of our lives. Every motel we sleep in, every town we run to, every birthday Lily has will be lived in the shadow of the Moretti syndicate. Tonight... it ends.”
Before I could argue, a sharp, electronic chime echoed from the security console near the alcove.
On the small monitor screen mounted to the wall, the thermal camera covering the eastern perimeter gate lit up with a bright, pulsing amber warning.
A single black van had just pulled up outside the gates.

The headlights flickered twice.
And then, the heavy iron chains began to give way.
