Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

By nine o'clock the following morning, the financial district of Chicago was buzzing with unexpected drama.

I walked through the revolving glass doors of the Vance Green Energy Midwest headquarters on Wacker Drive.

I did not arrive as a defensive ex-wife hiding behind legal retainers.

I arrived as the majority shareholder of Bio-Pure Dynamics, the proprietary chemical company that held the master licensing rights to Julian’s newest industrial reactors.

Every single solar farm Julian operated in North America relied on my patent number 8,421,902 to prevent catalytic core degradation.

Without that license, Julian’s billion-dollar Chicago plant would be forced to shut down operations within thirty days under federal environmental safety mandates.

I wore a tailored navy power suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional chignon.

Marcus walked beside me, carrying a leather dossier containing twenty-four specific breach-of-contract notices.

When the elevator doors opened onto the forty-fifth floor executive suite, the receptionist nearly dropped her telephone headset.

“Mrs... Dr. Vance?”

“Dr. Evelyn Brooks,” I corrected smoothly, using the maiden name that appeared on my doctoral degrees and patent registries.

“I am here for the emergency Midwest oversight meeting with Mr. Julian Vance and his Chief of Staff.”

Before the receptionist could hit the intercom button, the frosted glass doors of the main conference room flew open.

Julian stood in the doorway.

He had not slept.

The sharp lines of his Tom Ford suit were rumpled, his tie was loosened at his throat, and dark violet shadows bruised the skin beneath his gray-green eyes.

Behind him stood Victoria Chase.

She looked as pristine and lethal as ever in an ivory Chanel skirt suit, her blonde hair pinned into a severe twist.

When Victoria saw my face, the color visibly drained from her lips.

Her hand tightened around her silver tablet until her knuckles turned white.

“Evelyn,” Julian stepped forward, completely ignoring the four vice presidents seated around the mahogany conference table.

“You came.”

His voice held a raw, desperate relief that shocked his senior executives.

“I am here on corporate business, Mr. Vance,” I said, stepping past him into the boardroom and taking the seat at the head of the table.

Marcus sat down to my right, placing the thick leather dossier onto the polished wood with a heavy thud.

Victoria Chase quickly recovered her composure, her eyes narrowing into cold slits as she moved to Julian’s left.

“Julian, this is completely unorthodox,” Victoria hissed, her voice dripping with calculated venom.

“Dr. Brooks has no standing to demand an unscheduled executive hearing.”

“If this is an attempt to extort Vance Enterprises using personal family claims, our legal counsel will have her removed from the premises immediately.”

I didn't even look at Victoria.

I opened the folder, slid the top four documents across the table, and rested my fingertips against the paper.

“Exhibit A is a formal notice of material breach regarding patent 8,421,902.”

“Vance Enterprises has failed to maintain the required environmental bio-containment audits for the past two quarters.”

“Under clause fourteen of our master licensing agreement, Bio-Pure Dynamics is exercising its right to terminate your operational license effective forty-eight hours from this moment.”

The vice president of operations gasped, his face turning pale.

“Terminate? Julian, if she terminates the core bio-license, the federal regulators will padlock the entire Chicago plant by Friday morning!”

“We will lose four hundred million dollars in municipal contracts!”

Julian didn't look at the papers.

He didn't look at his panicked vice president.

He kept his eyes locked onto my face, his chest rising and falling in shallow, ragged breaths.

“You didn't come here to talk about patents, Evelyn.”

“You came here because of what happened at O'Hare yesterday.”

“I am here to protect my assets,” I stated with absolute, unyielding coldness.

“Both corporate and personal.”

“Your Chief of Staff just mentioned the word extortion, Julian.”

“So let us talk about extortion, forgery, and criminal interference.”

I pulled a second set of documents from the folder and slid them directly in front of Victoria Chase.

“Exhibit B.”

“A sworn forensic audit of the cellular transmissions routed through the Vance Enterprises internal server on October 14th, five years ago.”

Victoria flinched, taking half a step backward from the table.

“What is this?” Julian’s voice dropped into a dangerous, lethal register as he finally tore his gaze from me to look down at the papers.

“Those are the server logs, Julian,” Marcus spoke up, his voice cutting through the tense air of the boardroom like a razor.

“The messages you found on your tablet five years ago—the ones that made it look like Evelyn was selling our bio-catalyst to Harrison Drake in exchange for clandestine hotel meetings.”

“They never originated from Evelyn’s phone.”

“They were generated from an internal administrative console located on the forty-fifth floor of this very building.”

“Authorized under the user profile of Victoria Chase.”

The entire room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Julian slowly turned his head to look at the woman who had stood at his right hand for nearly a decade.

“Victoria?”

His voice was barely a whisper, but it carried enough latent violence to make the veteran executive tremble.

“Julian, listen to me,” Victoria stammered, her polished facade completely crumbling under his gaze.

“She was distracting you!”

“The company was preparing for the largest public offering in green-energy history!”

“You were spending half your time in her laboratory worrying about her high-risk medical appointments!”

“She was going to saddle you with three sickly children and derail the entire IPO valuation!”

“I did what was necessary to protect your legacy!”

The silence that followed was broken only by the sound of Julian’s knuckles cracking as his fists clenched at his sides.

The billionaire did not scream.

He did not throw a chair.

He looked at Victoria Chase with an expression of such terrifying, murderous revulsion that the woman instinctively backed against the wall.

“You forged the evidence that made me abandon my pregnant wife?”

Julian took a single, slow step toward her, his voice vibrating with pure venom.

“You intercepted the hospital notifications when my daughters were dying in incubators?”

“Julian, I did it for you!” Victoria cried, tears finally spilling over her mascara.

“I did it for the company!”

“Security,” Julian said, never raising his voice above a deadly whisper.

Two armed building security guards immediately stepped through the conference room doors.

“Escort Ms. Chase from this building immediately.”

“Confiscate her devices, revoke all security credentials, and notify the United States Attorney’s office that Vance Enterprises is filing formal criminal charges for corporate fraud, identity theft, and intentional interference with civil rights.”

Victoria gasped as the guards took her by the elbows.

“Julian! You can't do this to me! I built this empire with you!”

“Get her out of my sight before I forget my own name,” Julian growled.

The heavy glass doors swung shut behind Victoria’s sobbing protests.

Julian stood in the center of the boardroom, his broad shoulders trembling under his suit coat.

He turned back toward me, his eyes filled with a grief so profound it seemed to age him by twenty years in twenty seconds.

“Evelyn…”

May you like

He dropped to his knees right there on the polished hardwood floor in front of his entire executive board.

“My God, Evelyn… what have I done?”
