Chapter 6 - The Standoff on the Marble Floor

The heavy brass microphone trembled in my grip, but my voice never wavered for a single second.
Across the vast expanse of the ballroom, sixty of the most powerful people in the tri-state area froze with their glasses halfway to their mouths.
The crystal flutes began to shake in manicured hands, the champagne sloshing against gold rims.
Richard Dre stood motionless on the raised parquet platform right beside me, his knuckles turning dead white as he gripped his cane.
His predatory gray eyes shifted from the severed wires in Matthias’s bloody hands to Julian’s drawn federal service weapon.
The silence inside the room was so thick that the only sound was the howling wind rattling the stained-glass windows of the south terrace.
"Julian Vance," Richard said, his tone dropping into a low, terrifying calm that sent a chill straight down my spine.
"You are trespassing on private property during a private family celebration."
"Lower your weapon before my personal security detail removes you in a body bag."
Julian didn't blink, his tactical boots leaving dark wet tracks across the pristine white marble as he closed the distance.
"Your personal security detail has already been disarmed and zip-tied in the gatehouse, Richard."
"The Connecticut State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms have sealed every exit within four square miles."
"You aren't holding a Christmas party tonight."
"You are presiding over a federal crime scene."
A high-pitched shriek tore through the silence as a hedge fund heiress dropped her glass, the crystal shattering violently on the stone floor.
Panic spread through the crowd like gasoline catching an invisible spark.
Guests began pushing toward the grand double doors, murmuring in frantic, hushed voices as they reached for their coats.
"Nobody moves!" Julian’s voice cracked across the vaulted ceiling like a whip, echoing with unquestioned authority.
The two federal marshals at the base of the grand staircase raised their carbines to low-ready, their bodies blocking the foyer exit.
"Everyone in this room remains standing right where they are until my team completes the sweep for secondary ignition sources."
"Secondary ignition?" a bald real estate developer stammered, his face turning an ashen gray.
"What the hell is he talking about, Richard?"
"Is this place dangerous?"
Richard did not answer the man who had funded his real estate acquisitions for fifteen years.
His eyes remained locked entirely on his son.
Matthias was shivering violently, standing five paces behind Julian with his tailored tuxedo shirt soaked in greasy boiler soot.
His palms were lacerated, dark blood dripping from his fingertips onto the severed red and blue timing relays he held.
"You pathetic, cowardly boy," Richard whispered, the words dripping with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You brought federal agents into your own family’s home on the night of our greatest triumph."
"You were going to incinerate me, Dad!" Matthias screamed, his voice breaking into a ragged, hysterical sob that bounced off the portraits of his ancestors.
"You put my name on the liability waivers for Hensley Logistics!"
"You had Fiona book the hotel in New Haven under my personal tax identification number!"
"You set the timers beneath the east ballroom to detonate during the family toast!"
The words hit the crowd like a shockwave.
Several women gasped, clutching their pearl necklaces, while the corporate executives began backing away from the platform with wide, terrified eyes.
Fiona Vale tried to slip quietly behind the towering evergreen tree, her ivory dress brushing against the lower branches.
"Don't take another step, Miss Vale," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing through the surround-sound system.
Fiona stopped dead in her tracks, her manicured fingers digging into the pine needles until green sap stained her skin.
She turned slowly to face the platform, her perfectly painted lips trembling uncontrollably.
"I didn't know the extent of it, Serena!" Fiona cried out, the glamorous corporate facade completely crumbling into desperation.
"Richard promised me three million dollars in an offshore trust if I kept Matthias distracted during the quarterly audits!"
"He told me Matthias was reckless and needed to be managed!"
"He never told me about the boiler bypass!"
"He told me it was just a financial restructuring!"
"You lied to me," Matthias whispered, staring at Fiona as if he were seeing a demon for the first time.
"You told me you loved me in that hotel room."
"You told me I was the one who truly understood how to run Dre Holdings."
"She told you whatever your bloated ego needed to hear, you fool," Richard sneered, finally turning his head to look down at Matthias with utter contempt.
"Did you really believe a woman of Fiona’s ambition cared about a weak, indecisive shadow who couldn't even manage his own marriage?"
"You were a tool, Matthias."
"Just like your grandfather was a tool before him."
"Everything I built, everything I sacrificed for this family, was about to be liquidated because of your incompetent speculation in European bonds."
"You lost two billion dollars in six months, and you expected me to go to prison for your stupidity?"
Richard slowly turned his gaze back toward me, the corner of his thin mouth curling into a sinister smirk.
"And you, Serena."
"The brave little Florence Nightingale."
"You think because your brother brought a few badges into my living room, you've won?"
"You don't understand the first thing about how power works in this country."
"My private servers don't just hold debt records, my dear."
"They hold thirty years of wire transfers to every appellate judge, every state commissioner, and every regulatory chief who ever looked the other way."
"Before midnight arrives, a single phone call from my personal attorney will have this entire operation classified under national security privilege."
"You will leave this house with nothing, and your child will be born in a county holding facility."
A sharp, searing pain tore through the base of my spine, forcing a choked gasp from my throat.
My knees buckled slightly, but I caught the edge of the limestone mantel with my free hand, refusing to fall.
Beneath the velvet of my dress, my stomach tightened into a rock-hard knot that took my breath away.
The stress of the betrayal, the freezing cold, and the terrifying confrontation had triggered active labor.
I looked Richard Dre dead in his merciless eyes, ignoring the agony radiating through my hips.
"You're wrong, Richard."

"Your attorney won't be making any phone calls tonight."
"Because three hours ago, he surrendered his law license and handed over the master encryption keys to the Southern District of New York."
