Chapter 3 - THE MIDNIGHT VISITOR AND THE WHISPER IN THE HALLWAY

By her fourth night in the DeLuca estate, Natalie had learned the rhythm of the fortress. During the day, she homeschooled Ava, managing her sensory needs with precision, earning quiet, rare smiles from the little girl. At night, after Ava fell asleep under the heavy weighted blankets, the vast house became an echoing labyrinth of silence and secrets.

Natalie's quarters were located on the second floor of the east wing, just down the hall from Ava's suite. Around 2:00 AM, a strange sound pulled her from sleep.

It wasn't the wind rattling the reinforced glass windows. It was the distinct, muffled click of a heavy door closing downstairs, followed by the low, guttural murmur of angry voices.

Throwing on a light cashmere robe, Natalie slipped out into the corridor. The main hallway was bathed in the pale moonlight filtering through high arched windows. As she crept toward the grand staircase, she saw light spilling from Damian's private second-floor study.

The door was cracked open.

“You're moving too fast, Damian,” a harsh, gravelly voice echoed from inside. “The Chicago Outfit isn't going to sit back and let you take over the North Side freight terminals. If you push the docks, blood will spill on these lawns.”

Natalie froze, pressing her back against the polished wood paneling of the wall.

Damian's voice, cold as winter steel, replied instantly. “Let them try. Sal Marcone and his captains think my attention is divided because of my daughter. They think I'm weak. Tell them that the moment anyone steps foot past these gates with hostile intent, I won't just burn their operations to the ground. I'll hunt them down block by block.”

“You have that girl in the house now,” the visitor warned. “The new caregiver. What's her name—Natalie? Bringing an ordinary civilian into this war zone is reckless, Damian. If Marcone finds out—”

“Marcone won't find anything out unless you leak it, Victor,” Damian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into a lethal threat. “Are you leaking my movements?”

A heavy silence fell over the study. Natalie's heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Victor—the driver? No, Victor was downstairs; this must be someone else in Damian's inner circle.

“You know me better than that, boss,” the voice rasped. “Just... watch your blind spots. The police aren't the only ones watching the estate. There's a leak in your logistics department, and it's bleeding information straight to the Outfit.”

Steps suddenly shifted toward the door. Panic surged through Natalie's veins. She spun around, rushing silently back down the corridor toward her room just as the study door clicked open.

“Who's there?” Damian's voice rang out, sharp as a whip-crack down the hall.

Natalie slipped into her room, sliding the lock shut just as heavy, rapid footsteps approached her door. The footsteps paused outside her wood paneling. The air in her lungs felt frozen. She held her breath, praying to any god that would listen.

After three agonizing seconds, the footsteps continued down the hall.

Natalie slid down the back of the door, her hands trembling. She was trapped inside a multimillion-dollar war zone, working for a mafia kingpin, and she had just learned that the danger wasn't just outside the gates—it was right inside the house.
