Chapter 11 - The Shadow of Marseille over New York

The afternoon sun streamed through the bullet-resistant glass of the executive limousine as we left Manhattan behind us.

The city streets were bustling with yellow cabs, hurried pedestrians, and flashing billboard screens announcing the sudden arrest of Marcus Castalano.

Every major financial news network was broadcasting breaking headlines about the dramatic boardroom confrontation that had reshaped Wall Street in a single morning.

Mia was fast asleep across the wide leather seat, her small head resting comfortably against my lap.

She still wore her navy velvet dress, her tiny fingers clutching the silver baby rattle Vincent had safely returned to her after the federal agents copied the encrypted flash drive.

Vincent sat directly across from us, his long legs stretched out, his sharp eyes scanning endless encrypted streams of data on a black tablet.

He had removed his silk tie, unbuttoning the top two buttons of his tailored shirt to reveal the strong hollow of his throat.

Even in this rare moment of relative peace, the lethal tension never completely left the line of his broad shoulders.

“You haven't slept in over thirty-six hours, Vincent,” I said softly, conscious of the quiet hum of the armored engine.

Vincent lowered the tablet onto the leather cushion beside him.

His piercing hazel eyes met mine with an intensity that made the breath catch in my throat.

“Sleep is an expensive indulgence when an international syndicate boss has placed a bounty on my household,” he answered evenly.

“Marcus and Kenneth are locked in federal holding cells, but Lucian Dubois is still breathing free air in Europe.”

A cold shiver crept down my spine at the mention of the Corsican mobster.

“Do you truly believe he will follow through on his threat against Mia?” I asked, looking down at my sleeping child.

“Lucian Dubois made his fortune by ruthlessly enforcing debt collections across three continents,” Vincent explained, his tone deadly and calculating.

“He does not forgive a forty-million-euro loss.”

“More importantly, he cannot afford to look weak in front of the rival cartels in southern France and Italy.”

“If he allows Christian’s surviving child to inherit the Castalano estate without paying his tribute, his own lieutenants will put a bullet in the back of his skull before autumn.”

“Then what do we do?” I whispered, anxiety tightening my chest once again.

“We do not play defense, Clara.”

“The Castalanos do not cower behind castle walls waiting for assassins to breach the gates a second time.”

He reached across the space between us, his large, warm hand covering mine where it rested on Mia’s back.

The contrast between his calloused, battle-tested strength and my delicate frame was striking.

Yet there was no fear in me anymore—only a profound, grounding sense of safety whenever his skin touched mine.

“Renzo has spent the last five hours coordinating with Interpol and our maritime intelligence branches in Genoa,” Vincent continued quietly.

“We have tracked Lucian’s primary logistics fleet down to four registered container ships currently navigating the North Atlantic.”

“Every crate of illicit cargo on those vessels is being flagged for federal customs seizures as we speak.”

“By midnight tonight, Lucian’s empire in the Mediterranean will begin to suffocate under total financial embargo.”

“And when an apex predator suffocates, he becomes desperate and reckless.”

“He will come to New York himself.”

My eyes widened in alarm. “He is coming here?”

“He is already in the air,” Vincent said coldly, without a trace of hesitation.

“Our private tracking satellite picked up a chartered Gulfstream departing from a private airstrip outside Marseille three hours ago.”

“The flight plan is logged for a regional airfield in northern New Jersey.”

“He thinks he is flying under our radar using diplomatic clearance granted by a corrupt consul general.”

“He intends to land under cover of darkness, assemble his remaining sleeper cells in Brooklyn, and launch a final assault on the estate.”

Terror threatened to overwhelm me, but the calm, unyielding certainty in Vincent’s gaze held me upright.

“If you know his flight path, why haven't you notified the federal authorities to shoot the plane down or seize it on the runway?” I asked.

Vincent tilted his head slightly, a ghost of a predatory smirk curling the corners of his lips.

“Because international syndicates operate like hydras, Clara.”

“If the FBI arrests Lucian at an airport terminal, his top three capos will immediately scatter into the wind and spend the next ten years sending contract snipers after Mia.”

“The only way to ensure our daughter lives an entirely peaceful, normal life is to sever the head of the snake permanently on our own terms.”

The limousine turned off the highway, smoothly navigating the newly reinforced security gates of the estate.

Construction teams were already swarming the front entrance, installing heavy steel reinforcement beams and replacing broken stone pillars.

As the vehicle pulled beneath the grand portico, Vincent scooped Mia effortlessly into his arms, ensuring her sleep remained unbroken.

He stepped out onto the gravel and waited for me, offering his free hand to guide me down.

“Renzo,” Vincent called out as the security chief approached with a satellite telephone in hand.

“The trap is set at the private hangar in Teterboro, boss,” Renzo reported with a dark, satisfied nod.

“Our tactical units are embedded with the port authority counter-terrorism squad.”

“The moment Lucian’s wheels touch American soil, he won't be meeting an escort convoy.”

“He will be walking directly into a titanium cage.”

Vincent looked down at Mia, whose face was peaceful and completely untroubled by the storm gathering on the horizon.

“Let's make sure the cage is locked so tight that no ghost from Christian's past ever casts a shadow over this house again,” Vincent commanded.

He turned back toward me, his hazel eyes softening with a rare, unspoken tenderness.

“Come inside, Clara.”

“Tonight, you and Mia rest in the master wing.”

“And tomorrow morning, I promise you will wake up in a world where nobody can ever threaten our family again.”
