Chapter 4 - THE FALLOUT AT CARTER GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS

While Dr. Vance monitored my vitals in the safety of the penthouse living room, downtown at the gleaming, fifty-story glass tower of Carter Global Holdings, an entirely different kind of storm was making landfall in the executive suites.
Ryan Mercer had been dragged through the subterranean garage in handcuffs by federal marshals and deposited directly into the back of an unmarked black van, his designer suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his sobbing protests completely ignored by the media crews that my father’s PR team had conveniently tipped off.
Within twenty minutes of his arrest, the emergency board meeting of Mercer Enterprises was called to order on the forty-fifth floor of their corporate headquarters.
Only, it wasn't Ryan presiding over the table.
It was my father’s chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance, flanked by four senior corporate liquidators and representatives from the major federal banking institutions holding Ryan’s massive, leveraged debt portfolios.
The members of Ryan’s executive board—a collection of smug, sycophantic yes-men who had spent years laughing at my expense during corporate dinners—sat around the mahogany table in stunned, pale-faced silence.
Marcus Vance stood at the head of the conference table, calmly tossing a thick stack of forensic audit reports onto the polished wood surface with a loud, authoritative smack.
“Gentlemen,” Marcus began, his voice dripping with icy corporate disdain.
“Effective as of 8:45 AM this morning, Mercer Enterprises has ceased to operate as an independent entity.”
“Due to widespread corporate embezzlement, fraudulent loan guarantees, and systemic violations of federal securities regulations orchestrated by your CEO, Ryan Mercer, all corporate assets have been seized under emergency restructuring orders by Carter Global Holdings.”
A heavy-set board member, Arthur Sterling—a man who had once publicly mocked my dress sense at an annual charity gala—stood up so fast his chair tipped over backward onto the carpet.
“This is an outrage!” Sterling shouted, his face turning a furious shade of purple.
“You can’t just seize a publicly traded company on a whim! Where is Ryan? Get Ryan in here right now! This is corporate piracy!”
Marcus Vance didn’t even blink; he simply offered a cold, humorless smile, sliding a single photograph across the table toward Sterling.
The photograph showed Ryan handcuffed, weeping, and being shoved into the back of a federal transport van outside his penthouse.
“Mr. Mercer is currently indisposed,” Marcus replied smoothly.
“He is presently assisting federal prosecutors with their inquiries into wire fraud, tax evasion, and felony domestic battery.”
“As for your position on this board, Mr. Sterling?” Marcus added, leaning forward with his hands resting flat on the mahogany table.
“Our forensic audit has flagged your personal accounts for receiving over two million dollars in kickbacks from unauthorized subsidiary accounts.”
“You can either surrender your corporate credentials right now and walk out the front doors quietly, or you can join Mr. Mercer in a holding cell before lunch.”
Sterling stared at the photograph, the color completely draining from his face as the terrifying realization of his own complicity in Ryan’s criminal enterprise crashed down upon him.

Without saying another word, Sterling grabbed his briefcase off the floor, turned around, and practically bolted out of the executive boardroom without looking back.
The remaining board members sat frozen in their seats, realizing with absolute terror that the golden shield of the Mercer dynasty had shattered into a million pieces, leaving them entirely exposed to the unyielding wrath of the Carter family empire.
