Chapter 10 - Cornered in the Lions' Den

The silence in the archive room was so suffocating that the hum of the fluorescent lights sounded like a buzzing hornets' nest.

Six red laser dots danced steadily over Julian’s chest and Clara’s throat.

Harrison took a slow, theatrical step forward, extending an open hand with a cruel smirk curling his lips.

“Hand over the hard drive and the seal, Julian,” Harrison said, his voice smooth as venom.

“Maybe, if you cooperate like a good dog, I’ll let your mistress’s sister stay on the ventilator for another forty-eight hours.”

Clara’s heart stopped in her chest, the cold threat against Lily cutting through her veins like ice water.

Julian didn't flinch; he took a deliberate step sideways, placing his broad frame directly between the laser sights and Clara.

“You touch that child, Harrison, and there isn't a federal prison in this country that will keep you alive,” Julian said softly.

“Is that a threat from a homeless man in custodial overalls?” Vivienne laughed, taking a slow sip of her vodka.

“Look around you, Julian.”

“The board belongs to Harrison.”

“The district attorney belongs to my father.”

“And in less than seven hours, the entire clean energy division will be registered under my private offshore trust in Panama.”

“Arthur Hayes died in a ditch, and tonight, his little cleaning girl is going to join him.”

Vivienne turned to the lead mercenary guard, her face twisting into a hideous sneer of pure cruelty.

“Take the girl first,” Vivienne ordered coldly.

“I want to watch Julian beg before we throw them down the lift shaft.”

The two guards on the left stepped forward, reaching out with heavy tactical gloves to seize Clara’s arms.

Julian moved before their fingers could touch her.

With blinding speed, Julian seized the heavy iron safe door, slamming it violently outward with all his physical strength.

The massive two-hundred-pound steel door struck the first guard squarely in the chest, shattering his ribs with a sickening crunch.

The guard went down with a strangled scream, his weapon skittering across the floor toward Clara.

“Run, Clara!” Julian roared, throwing his entire body into the second guard, tackling him into the mahogany display cases.

Glass shattered in an explosion of sharp crystal, rain-soaked air rushing through the upper ventilation louvers.

Harrison stepped back in shock, shouting hysterically to his men: “Shoot him! Don't let her touch the alarm!”

A guard raised his weapon toward Clara, but Clara didn't run away.

Instead, she scooped up the fallen operative’s heavy tactical stun baton from the carpet.

With a fierce cry of pure maternal fury, Clara lunged forward, thrusting the active high-voltage prongs directly into the guard’s neck.

Blue electricity crackled with a violent zap, and the two-hundred-pound man convulsed violently before dropping face-first onto the marble trim.

Vivienne screamed in genuine terror, dropping her vodka glass as it shattered across the carpet.

She turned to flee through the double doors, but Clara was already upon her.

Clara seized Vivienne by the collar of her immaculate ivory silk jumpsuit, spinning her around with irresistible force.

Vivienne’s back slammed against the heavy mahogany wall, the breath knocked out of her lungs in a pathetic wheeze.

“Seven years ago, you had my father murdered and called him a coward!” Clara yelled, her eyes blazing like twin furnaces of justice.

“You starved my family, you smeared my name across the news, and you tried to murder my little sister!”

“You think an expensive dress makes you better than a woman who cleans your filth?”

Clara drove a hard, open-palm strike straight into Vivienne’s porcelain cheekbone, sending the billionaire heiress crashing to her knees.

Vivienne lay on the floor, clutching her bleeding lip, weeping in sheer, unadulterated terror.

Meanwhile, across the room, Julian was locked in a brutal struggle with the remaining two guards.

A heavy blow struck Julian across the temple, opening a jagged cut that sent blood streaming down the side of his face.

Another guard caught Julian with a vicious knee to the ribs, forcing him down onto one knee.

Harrison Reed rushed over, pulling a silver snub-nosed revolver from his inner jacket pocket.

Harrison leveled the barrel directly between Julian’s eyes, his hand trembling with psychotic desperation.

“It’s over, Julian!” Harrison screamed, his eyes wild with panic.

“I built this empire while you played philanthropist!”

“I am not going to let a dead auditor and a gutter rat take it away from me!”

Harrison’s finger tightened against the trigger, the hammer beginning its slow, mechanical pull backward.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion shattered the reinforced plate-glass windows along the southern wall of the suite.

Shards of heavy safety glass showered the room like a blizzard of diamonds.

Four tactical ropes dropped from the rooftop above, and heavily armed operators in dark tactical gear swung into the room.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DOWN ON THE FLOOR NOW!”

The voice of the lead operator boomed with thunderous, deafening authority through tactical megaphones.

Marcus Cole breached through the broken window frame, his assault rifle leveled squarely at Harrison Reed’s skull.

Behind Marcus came twelve sworn agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the state attorney general’s financial crimes division.

Harrison froze, his face turning an impossible shade of grey as the red laser sights of twelve federal sniper rifles locked onto his forehead.

The revolver slipped from Harrison’s nerveless fingers, clattering uselessly against the bloodstained wool carpet.

“Harrison Reed, Vivienne Vance,” a tall federal agent announced, displaying a signed gold warrant badge.

“You are under arrest for federal securities fraud, interstate wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and the unlawful assassination of Arthur Hayes.”

Harrison dropped to his knees, his hands trembling violently above his head as federal handcuffs ratcheted around his wrists.

Vivienne sobbed hysterically on the floor, her ivory jumpsuit smeared with blood, dirt, and shattered glass.

Julian pulled himself up against the safe, his breathing heavy and ragged, blood dripping from his cut temple.

Clara dropped the stun baton and rushed straight into his arms, burying her face against his chest.

Julian wrapped his strong, bloodied arms around her, holding her tightly as the entire skyscraper filled with the sirens of twenty federal vehicles below.

He looked down at Clara, his hand gently lifting her chin so their eyes met amidst the chaos.

“We did it, Clara,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with profound emotion.

“Arthur won.”

Clara looked up through her tears, seeing the dawn light breaking over the Manhattan skyline through the shattered glass.

Her father’s name was finally clean, Lily was safe, and the monsters who ruled from high towers were led away in iron chains.

Yet, as Harrison was hauled past them toward the freight elevator, the disgraced executive looked back at Julian with a twisted, chilling grin.

“You think arresting me saves you, Julian?” Harrison spat, blood bubbling on his teeth.

“I wasn't the head of the syndicate.”

“I was just the accountant.”

“The real master of the Prescott alliance is landing at the private airport in thirty minutes.”

“And he’s coming for everything you have left.”CHAPTER 11 — The Shadow of the Patriarch

The Gulfstream jet touched down on the private runway of Teterboro Airport amidst the howling rain.

Its sleek black fuselage cut through the morning fog like a predator emerging from the deep sea.

The stairs lowered with a hydraulic hiss into the frigid Atlantic wind.

A silver-haired titan stepped onto the tarmac, wrapped in a bespoke vicuña overcoat with an ivory-handled walking cane.

Victor Prescott, the eighty-year-old patriarch of the Prescott banking dynasty, did not flinch against the biting sleet.

Behind him walked four private security operatives wearing earpieces and suppressed tactical sidearms.

A black Maybach limousine waited at the edge of the runway, its motor purring with muffled power.

The door opened instantly as Victor approached with measured, unhurried strides.

Inside the vehicle sat the state district attorney, his forehead glistening with nervous perspiration.

“Victor, everything went wrong at Vance Tower,” the district attorney stammered, pulling at his stiff collar.

“The FBI raided the executive archive thirty minutes ago.”

“Harrison Reed is in federal custody.”

“Vivienne was dragged out in handcuffs in front of thirty news cameras.”

“They have the offshore transfer records and Arthur Hayes's original encrypted hard drive.”

Victor did not raise his voice; he merely rested his gloved hands over the carved eagle head of his cane.

His steel-grey eyes were devoid of panic, sorrow, or paternal affection.

“Vivienne was always an arrogant, shortsighted fool,” Victor remarked coldly, looking out the tinted window at the wet runway.

“I gave her thirty million dollars in offshore liquidity, and she wasted it hosting parties and picking fights with kitchen help.”

“If she is weak enough to be caught, she can rot in a federal cell.”

“What about Harrison?” the district attorney asked, his voice shaking.

“Harrison will keep his mouth shut if he wants his family in Switzerland to keep breathing,” Victor answered with chilling detachment.

“My concern is not Harrison or Vivienne.”

“My concern is the master ledger Arthur Hayes left behind in Vault 409.”

“If that ledger reaches the state supreme court, it names three sitting senators, four appellate judges, and sixty years of Prescott holdings.”

“We must eradicate every trace of the Hayes bloodline before the banks open their doors.”

The district attorney swallowed hard, his hands trembling over his leather briefcase.

“Julian Vance has placed the younger Hayes child under armed guard at his family's private estate in Blackwood Ridge,” the attorney whispered.

“Julian thinks his grandfather’s old hunting grounds are invisible to the state registry.”

Victor curled his thin lips into a cruel, ruthless sneer.

“Nothing in this state is invisible to me,” Victor said softly.

“Call Colonel Vance’s old private militia contractors.”

“Send two assault teams to Blackwood Ridge immediately.”

“Take the sick child alive as our bargaining chip.”

“If Julian refuses to trade Arthur's depository key for the girl’s life, burn the entire estate to the ground.”

Meanwhile, inside the shattered executive suite of Vance Tower, Julian was wrapping a sterile bandage around his bleeding temple.

Federal agents were cataloging evidence, boxing up Harrison’s desktop computers and sealing filing cabinets with blue forensic tape.

Clara stood by the panoramic window, watching the rain wash down the exterior glass where the sniper ropes still swung.

Her heart pounded with restless anxiety, an intuitive dread clawing at her stomach.

Marcus Cole walked briskly into the room, holding an encrypted satellite phone to his ear.

His rugged face was pale, his eyes darting toward Julian with emergency urgency.

“Boss, we have an intercept on the private tactical frequencies,” Marcus said, lowering his voice so the federal agents couldn't hear.

“Victor Prescott landed at Teterboro fifteen minutes ago.”

“He bypassed the corporate offices completely.”

“Two unmarked tactical vans just departed an industrial depot in Westchester, heading directly toward Blackwood Ridge.”

Clara gasped, dropping the ice towel she was holding for Julian’s bruised cheek.

“Lily!” Clara screamed, grabbing Julian’s arm with desperate strength.

“They’re going after Lily!”

“They know she’s at the estate!”

Julian caught Clara by the waist, his jaw setting into solid granite.

“Marcus, alert Dr. Evans and the two security guards at the manor,” Julian commanded instantly.

“Have them move Lily into the sub-basement fallout shelter behind the wine cellar.”

“That vault door was forged with three-inch ballistic steel during the Cold War.”

“No light infantry unit can breach it without heavy demolition charges.”

Marcus shook his head grimly as he tapped the tablet screen.

“The cellular tower covering Blackwood Ridge just went dark, boss.”

“Victor’s team deployed a military-grade localized frequency jammer.”

“Dr. Evans and the guards have no idea the assault team is coming.”

Clara’s knees gave out, but Julian caught her firmly, pulling her up against his chest.

“Look at me, Clara,” Julian demanded, his voice burning with unwavering authority.

“We are not going to lose her.”

“Your father died protecting my family from the Prescotts.”

“I will tear down the sky before I let Victor Prescott lay a finger on your sister.”

Julian turned to Marcus with lethal precision.

“Call the private airfield at Hudson Heliport.”

“Get my twin-engine Sikorsky off the pad right now.”

May you like

“We fly above the storm clouds directly to Blackwood Ridge.”

“If Victor wants a war on my family’s land, I will give him one he will never forget.”
