Chapter 6 - The Dawn of Absolute Reckoning

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan with a pale, steely glare, casting long, shivering shadows across the quiet residential streets of downtown Chicago as the clock struck seven-thirty.

Inside the small apartment on Racine Avenue, the kitchen was already alive with the quiet, comforting sounds of a new day beginning.

Marissa Miller stood over the stove, stirring a small pot of oatmeal while keeping a close eye on the analog clock hanging on the wall, her mind wrestling with the grim reality that today was Wednesday, and she had less than forty-eight hours to secure four hundred dollars for her mother’s medication.

Her shoulders felt stiff, carrying the heavy emotional residue of yesterday’s public humiliation and abrupt firing at Harper’s Table.

Sarah Miller sat at the small kitchen table, wrapped in a knitted woolen shawl, sipping a cup of chamomile tea and watching her daughter with a gaze full of quiet, unyielding love.

"You don't have to rush out so early this morning, sweetheart," Sarah said gently, her voice carrying the soft rasp of chronic fatigue. "Take a breath. The world isn't going to end because you take one morning to find your footing."

Marissa forced a reassuring smile, turning off the burner and spooning the warm oatmeal into a ceramic bowl. "I know, Mom. But I want to drop off resumes at three different diners along Randolph Street before noon. If I start early, I might land something by tomorrow afternoon."

Before Sarah could reply, a sharp, authoritative rap echoed against the apartment's front door, breaking the quiet morning air with startling suddenness.

Marissa froze, her heart skipping a beat as a cold spike of anxiety pierced her chest, her mind instantly flashing to utility shut-off notices or landlord complaints about late rent.

"Stay here, Mom," Marissa whispered, wiping her hands on her trousers and walking cautiously toward the entryway.

When she swung the heavy wooden door open, she didn’t expect to see a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal-grey tailored suit holding a sleek leather portfolio and standing alongside a uniformed Chicago police officer.

The man had sharp, aristocratic features, silver-streaked temples, and an air of absolute, unshakeable authority that made Marissa instantly step back.

"Are you Marissa Miller?" the man asked, his voice crisp, professional, and entirely devoid of malice.

"Yes," Marissa said, her throat tightening as she gripped the doorframe for support. "I am. Is something wrong?"

The man offered a polite, reassuring nod, stepping slightly aside to reveal a small, elegant document holder embossed with gold lettering. "My name is Robert Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Calloway Legal Counsel. I am here on behalf of Mr. Ethan Calloway."

Marissa blinked, completely bewildered, the name echoing in her mind like something out of a financial newspaper she could never afford to buy. "Ethan Calloway? I... I don't know any Ethan Calloway. I used to work at Harper’s Table, but—"

"You did work at Harper’s Table, Miss Miller," Sterling interrupted smoothly, opening the portfolio to reveal a stack of legal documents bearing official county seals. "And as of eight o’clock this morning, Harper’s Table LLC has been acquired in full by Calloway Holdings. Furthermore, Mr. Calloway has instructed us to deliver three specific items to you without delay."
