Chapter 14 - The Face of the Commissioner

The four tactical operators raised suppressed carbines, spreading out in a semi-circle across the vault threshold.

Nico didn't reach for his gun; he remained standing beside the examination table, his broad shoulders squared against the light.

"You followed us," Nico said, his voice flat, dangerously composed.

"Of course I followed you, son," Vance replied, walking into the center of the chamber with casual elegance.

"Did you really think an old municipal sedan on Route Eleven could evade state police satellite tracking?"

"I let you clear the security protocols at the door."

"After all, Elena designed this vault specifically to keep me out."

"I needed your eyes to unlock the prize."

Vance glanced at the reel-to-reel player on the table, a faint, condescending smile touching his lips.

"And now, the final loose end of nineteen ninety-eight is neatly gathered in one subterranean room."

"You are a coward, Marcus," Margaret Romano said, stepping out from behind Nico, her sightless gaze fixed directly on the sound of his voice.

"You were a coward when you hid behind a gold shield thirty years ago, and you are a coward now."

Vance’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold disgust.

"Quiet, old woman."

"You and Salvatore belonged to a dying world of street extortion and crude violence."

"I built an empire using the law as my scalpel."

"In two months, I will be the chief executive of this city."

"The courts will answer to me."

"The police will answer to me."

"And the Romano shipping docks will become the primary transit hub for an international logistics network worth billions."

Vance turned his gaze back onto Nico, extending an open hand toward the young mob boss.

"Join me, Nico."

"Hand over that tape, and let the girl and the old woman disappear into the system."

"You and I are the same blood."

"We are men of vision."

"You were never a Romano; you were born to rule this city beside your real father."

Nico looked down at Vance’s outstretched hand, then slowly raised his eyes to meet the older man's gaze.

"You look at me and see yourself, Vance," Nico said, his voice low and resonant within the steel chamber.

"You see your jawline."

"You see your ambition."

"You see your cold, calculating cruelty."

"Salvatore Romano had many flaws."

"He was a violent man who broke laws and ruled through fear."

"But when I had pneumonia at eight years old, Salvatore stayed awake beside my bed for four straight nights."

"When I was jumped by three boys in Queens, he taught me how to stand on my feet and never beg for mercy."

"He never abandoned his family for a title, and he never shot a woman in the back of a kitchen."

"You are not my father, Vance."

"You are just the man whose blood I'm going to wash out of this city."

Vance’s face darkened with savage fury.

"Then you die with the rest of the trash," Vance snarled, raising his right hand to signal his gunmen.

"Shoot them all."

"Leave the bodies and burn the tape."

Before the lead operative could squeeze his trigger, a high-pitched digital chime echoed from Thomas Grant’s coat pocket.

Thomas held up a small, military-grade satellite transmitter, its green data light blinking in rapid succession.

"Too late, Commissioner," Thomas said, a victorious smile spreading across his weathered face.

"What did you do?" Vance demanded, stepping backward toward the door.

"That reel-to-reel player wasn't just playing through the vault speakers," Thomas said, pointing to a small patch cable running from the audio jack into his transmitter.

"It was being routed through a direct federal relay to the State Attorney General’s special integrity unit in Albany."

"Every word on that tape, and every word you just spoke in this room, has been live-streamed to twenty news networks."

"The federal marshals are pulling up to your precinct headquarters right now."

Vance’s face went dead white, his polished veneer cracking into absolute terror.

"Kill them!" Vance screamed at his men.

"Kill them now!"

The lead operative lowered his weapon by two inches, looking uncertainly at his commander.

"Sir... the dispatch channels are lighting up," the operative whispered through his helmet radio.

"State police command has issued an immediate stand-down order for all units assigned to your detail."

"Federal warrants have just been unsealed."

Sirens began to wail in the streets above the depository, dozens of them, converging on the loading dock with frantic urgency.

Heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete corridor outside the vault.

Federal agents in dark blue jackets bearing yellow FBI insignia flooded into the chamber with rifles raised, their laser sights sweeping the room.

"Marcus Vance, drop your weapon and get on your knees!" an agent roared through a megaphone.

Vance looked frantically around the circular vault, seeing the guns pointed at his chest, seeing the red light blinking on Thomas’s transmitter, and seeing the cold, unyielding face of his biological son.

The Deputy Commissioner slowly raised his trembling hands into the air, falling to his knees on the cold steel floor.

Nico looked down at the broken man kneeling before him, his voice cutting through the vault like a final verdict.

"Take him away," Nico said to the federal agents.

"He doesn't belong to this family."
