Chapter 13 - The Alliance of Blood and Law

An hour later, the grand library of the Vance estate looked like an underground military tactical operations center.

Detailed topographic maps of the Boston harbor district were spread across the antique mahogany conference table alongside high-resolution satellite imagery.

Julian Vance stood at the head of the table, dressed in a crisp black tactical turtleneck, his eyes dark with calculating intensity.

I was sitting in a heavy leather armchair with a heating pad pressed against my bandaged ribs, clutching a glass of water while Marcus monitored encrypted radio chatter on three separate laptops.

Dr.

Harrison had pumped me full of military-grade painkillers, allowing me to stay upright and think with razor-sharp clarity.

“Donato landed at Hanscom Airfield at four o’clock this morning on a private Gulfstream registered to an offshore shell corporation in Panama,” Julian said, pointing to a highlighted flight manifest on the tablet.

“He didn't come alone,” Marcus added, pulling up a series of grainy surveillance photographs taken at the private aviation terminal.

“He brought twelve hardened Sicilian operators with him.

Ex-military, fully armed with foreign automatic weapons, and completely untraceable through standard American criminal databases.”

“My mother knows her legal avenues are completely dead,” I said, my voice cold and gravelly.

“Julian’s grand jury files on Judge Arthur Vance terrified the state judiciary.

Every corrupt judge in Massachusetts has recused themselves from Victoria's emergency petitions.”

“Arthur Vance resigned from the bench three hours ago,” Julian confirmed with a grim smirk.

“The United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts has already opened a formal federal bribery investigation into his bank accounts.”

“Which means Victoria has only one move left on the board,” I continued, leaning forward against the table despite the sharp pain in my side.

“She eliminates Julian.

She eliminates me.

She extracts the twins by force and disappears onto an international tanker out of Boston harbor before the federal government can coordinate a response.”

Julian looked at me across the table, his analytical mind processing every variable with chilling precision.

“They won't attack this estate directly,” Julian noted, tapping the architectural blueprints of his property.

“After yesterday's failure in Brookline, they know we’ve reinforced the perimeter with armed private contractors.

They know a prolonged firefight in an elite residential enclave like Chestnut Hill would draw municipal and state police tactical units within eight minutes.”

“You're right,” I agreed, nodding slowly.

“Donato is vicious, but he isn't stupid.

He won't hit an entrenched fortress.

He will look for a vulnerable transition point.”

“Or,” Julian’s eyes locked onto mine with a dangerous, lethal glint, “we give him the target he wants on our own terms.”

Marcus looked up from his monitors, alarmed.

“What are you suggesting, Vance?”

“Donato came to Boston to clean up Victoria's mess,” Julian explained, walking around the table to point at the map of the South Boston Industrial Marine Terminal.

“He needs to eliminate Adrian to secure the Moretti succession in Chicago.

If he believes Adrian is being moved under armed escort to a private medical airfield near the docks, he won't be able to resist springing an ambush.”

“You want to use me as bait,” I said, a dark, approving grin spreading across my face.

“Only if you have the stomach for it, Moretti,” Julian challenged me coolly.

“I took a bullet for your kids yesterday, Vance,” I fired back.

“You think I’m afraid of my psychotic uncle?”

“The difference this time,” Julian said, opening a secure encrypted laptop and entering an eighteen-digit federal access code, “is that we won't be fighting an isolated mob skirmish.

We will have the full weight of the federal government waiting in the wings.”

On the screen, a secure video link connected directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Boston Field Office.

Special Agent in Charge David Miller appeared on the high-definition monitor, surrounded by tactical squad commanders.

“Julian,” Agent Miller nodded respectfully through the screen.

“We have the tactical entry teams on standby.

The Attorney General has personally signed off on the federal emergency task force under the Title III wiretap authorizations.”

“Miller, we have positive visual confirmation on Donato Moretti and his Sicilian cell,” Julian stated with absolute legal authority.

“They are armed with unlicensed automatic weapons and planning a coordinated domestic terror extraction at the South Boston Marine Terminal tonight at midnight.”

“We will be there in full tactical force,” Agent Miller promised.

“Nobody leaves that pier alive or unhandcuffed.”

Julian closed the laptop and turned back to face me and Marcus.

“The plan is set,” Julian said.

“Evelyn, Leo, and Maya are being transported right now under armed federal marshal escort to a secure bunker at Hanscom Air Force Base.

They will be completely untouchable.”

At that moment, the library door opened quietly.

Evelyn walked in, holding little Maya by the hand while Leo walked beside her.

Both children were wearing warm winter coats, looking sleepy and confused by the sudden commotion.

Julian immediately walked over, kneeling down to wrap his arms around all three of them, whispering soothing words of love and reassurance into Evelyn's hair.

I sat quietly in my chair, watching the beautiful, intact family from across the room.

Then Evelyn gently guided Maya and Leo toward where I sat.

Little Maya looked up at me with her bright dark eyes—my eyes—and held out a small paper drawing covered in messy purple and green crayon scribbles.

“For you, Mr.

Adrian,” Maya whispered shyly, hiding her face against Evelyn’s coat.

“So your chest doesn't hurt anymore.”

My throat closed up completely as I accepted the fragile piece of paper from her tiny hands.

On the paper, she had drawn four stick figures holding hands under a smiling yellow sun, and beside them, a fifth stick figure with a large red heart drawn over its chest.

A guardian.

“Thank you, Maya,” I choked out, folding the drawing with exquisite care and tucking it into the inner pocket of my coat, right against my bandaged heart.

“You be a good girl for your mommy and daddy, okay?”

“Okay,” she nodded softly.

Evelyn looked down at me, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

“Come back alive, Adrian,” she said, her voice full of genuine affection and respect.

“For them.”

“I will,” I promised, looking up at the only family I had ever wanted, and the only family I was willing to die to protect.

May you like

“Now go with the marshals.

Julian and I have some family business to finish.”
