Chapter 5 - THE WRATH OF THE WATERFRONT GHOST

The warehouse door didn't just open—it exploded inward.
The heavy steel hinges sheared off with a deafening screech of rending metal as Roman Calder drove his shoulder through the barrier. The force of the impact sent iron bolts flying across the room like shrapnel.
Evelyn Sterling spun around, her face draining of all color in a fraction of a second. The two guards instantly reached for the suppressed pistols inside their suit jackets, but they were dealing with a ghost who moved faster than thought.
Roman didn't draw a gun. He moved with the terrifying, predatory grace of a cornered apex predator.
Before the first guard could clear leather, Roman closed the ten-foot gap between them. He caught the man by the throat with one massive hand, lifted him off the ground with effortless brutality, and slammed his skull directly into a concrete support pillar. The guard went limp instantly, dropping like a sack of wet cement.
The second guard panicked, pulling his weapon and leveling it at Roman’s chest.
"Roman! Wait!" Evelyn shrieked, stumbling backward into a stack of empty crates. "I can explain—it’s just a maid—she was trying to ruin us—"
Bang.
The gunshot echoed off the corrugated metal walls, but the bullet never touched Roman. With supernatural reflexes, Roman had sidestepped the muzzle flash, grabbed the second guard’s wrist, and twisted it until bone snapped with a sickening crack. As the man screamed, Roman delivered a devastating knee strike to his sternum, dropping him to the floor gasping for air, unconscious before he hit the ground.
Silence fell over the warehouse again, save for the heavy, ragged breathing of Roman Calder.
He stood in the center of the gloom, his tailored suit jacket slightly rumpled, his dark eyes burning with a cold, absolute fury that made the air in the room feel several degrees colder. He didn't look at Evelyn. He didn't look at the unconscious guards.
His gaze locked entirely on the small, broken figure tied to the floor in the corner.
"Nora," he whispered.
It was the first time he had ever spoken her name aloud. It didn't sound like a mob boss addressing an employee. It sounded like a prayer uttered by a dying man.
Roman dropped to his knees beside her. The coldness in his face vanished, replaced by a raw, horrified shock as he saw the blood-encrusted ropes cutting deep into her wrists, the cracked lips, and the pale, bruised skin of her face.
With shaking hands—the same hands that had signed death warrants and brokered billion-dollar contraband deals—Roman pulled a silver pocket knife from his trousers and carefully sliced through the hemp ropes.
Nora groaned softly as the circulation rushed back into her limbs, her body collapsing sideways. Roman caught her before she hit the concrete, pulling her lightweight, shivering frame against his chest with fierce, protective desperation.
"I've got you," he muttered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt since he was a child watching his own family burn. "I've got you, Nora. Open your eyes."
Nora slowly fluttered her eyelashes open, her clouded gaze fixing on his face. She didn't recognize where she was, but she felt the solid warmth of his coat.
"Caleb..." she whispered, her lips barely moving. "My... my brother..."
"He's safe," Roman lied—or rather, made a sacred vow to ensure it was true before the sun rose. "He's alive. I swear to you on my mother's grave, he is safe."
Slowly, Roman turned his head.
Evelyn Sterling was pressed flat against the back wall, trembling violently, her designer handbag clutched to her chest like a shield. Her lipstick was smeared, and the mascara was running down her cheeks.
"Roman," she whimpered, her voice high and manic. "Roman, listen to me. She was trying to destroy us! She was stealing your secrets, she was—"
Roman gently laid Nora down on his folded jacket, making sure her head was propped up. Then, he stood slowly to his full, towering height. He didn't run toward Evelyn. He walked toward her with the slow, deliberate steps of an executioner walking to the guillotine.
"Roman, please!" Evelyn sobbed, sliding down the wall as he approached. "We're engaged! My father is Judge Sterling! We're supposed to rule this city together!"
Roman stopped three feet away from her. He looked down at her with an expression so devoid of humanity, so utterly dead, that Evelyn stopped breathing entirely.
"Your father's jurisdiction ends at the county line, Evelyn," Roman said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet whisper that vibrated through the floorboards. "And your life ended the moment you laid a hand on someone under my roof."
He reached out, grabbed her by the diamond-encrusted collar of her white trench coat, and lifted her off her feet as if she weighed nothing at all.
"Get these men out of my sight," Roman commanded without turning around, as two of his own loyal enstepped out of the shadows by the doorway, having just arrived outside. "And pack Evelyn’s things. Send her to her father’s chambers with a note: The engagement is dissolved. If he mentions my name in public again, I'll release the ledgers showing every bribe he took to clear her mother's estate."
May you like
Evelyn opened her mouth to scream, but Roman shoved her into the arms of his men with such violence that she choked on her own terror. As they dragged her kicking and sobbing out into the grey afternoon, Roman turned his back on them completely.
He dropped back to his knees beside Nora Hayes.
