Chapter 10 - The Architecture of Vengeance

The sharp crack of a suppressed rifle round sliced through the hum of the hangar’s generators like a whip.

High up on the steel catwalks of Crane 7, eighty feet above the concrete floor, the lead Blackstone sniper jerked violently backward.

The mercenary collapsed over the yellow safety railing, his heavy rifle tumbling through the air before crashing onto the concrete floor with a deafening metallic clatter.

Before the echo could fade, a second suppressed round struck the western catwalk, dropping the second marksman where he stood.

Michael Romano stood on the gantry ladder platform, his carbine smoking, his eyes cold and unwavering as he racked his third round into the chamber.

"Ambush! Catwalks!" one of the ground mercenaries roared, raising his weapon toward the shadows of the crane structure.

Before the guard could acquire his target, the iron maintenance hatch in the floor slammed open with explosive violence.

Alexander Romano rose from the subterranean darkness like an avenging phantom, his Colt .45 firing in rapid, rhythmic double taps.

The first two rounds took the nearest tactical contractor in the center of his chest plate, the concussive kinetic energy hurling him backward against the armored carrier.

The second pair of rounds caught the third operative through his throat, severing the jugular and dropping him into a pool of industrial runoff.

Panic erupted instantly across the illuminated hangar.

Raymond Vance spun around, his camel-hair overcoat whipping behind him as he raised his gold-plated pistol toward Eleanor’s head.

"Kill her! Kill the old woman!" Vance screamed, his aristocratic composure shattering into feral terror.

Alexander did not hesitate.

He did not aim for Vance; he aimed for the hydraulic suspension line of the hundred-ton gantry hoist hanging directly above the armored carrier.

The heavy .45-caliber hollow-point round severed the pressurized steel hydraulic valve.

A geyser of black hydraulic fluid exploded across the floodlights, instantly blinding the remaining two ground mercenaries standing beside the vehicle.

Taking advantage of the split second of chaos, Alexander crossed the thirty feet of open concrete in a dead sprint, ignoring the agonizing tears in his healing ribs.

He drove his shoulder into the nearest contractor, slamming the man’s helmet into the steel pillar with enough force to shatter the fiberglass casing.

The mercenary collapsed, unconscious, as Alexander spun on his heel to face Vance.

Vance fired two erratic shots through the spraying hydraulic mist, the bullets ricocheting harmlessly off the reinforced concrete floor near Alexander’s boots.

Alexander closed the distance, his left hand striking Vance’s wrist with a vicious upward palm strike that sent the gold-plated pistol flying across the hangar.

Alexander seized Vance by the throat with his uninjured hand, slamming the port security chief against the rusted flank of the armored carrier.

Vance gasped for air, his fingers clawing desperately at Alexander’s iron grip, his eyes bulging with the sudden terror of a man who realized he was entirely outmatched.

Twenty feet away, Victor Hale was scrambling on his hands and knees, dragging his broken legs across the oil-slicked floor toward the hangar's open loading bay.

His aluminum crutches clattered uselessly against the ground as he whimpered in sheer panic.

"Stay where you are, Victor," a cold, steady voice commanded from the shadows of the southern door.

Michael Romano stepped into the light, his M4 carbine raised to his shoulder, the barrel trained directly on the back of Victor’s skull.

Victor froze, his face pressed against the cold concrete, his body trembling with absolute helplessness.

"Michael... please..." Victor begged, choking on tears and bile.

"I took care of you... I protected your father’s money... I did it for the family..."

Michael stepped closer, stopping two feet from the man who had manipulated his insecurities and engineered his brother's near-death.

"You poisoned my father with digitalis while he was looking you in the eyes, Victor," Michael said, his voice terrifyingly calm.

"You don't get to say his name ever again."

Alexander tightened his grip on Raymond Vance’s throat, pressing the muzzle of his Colt against the soft flesh beneath the chief's jaw.

"The game is finished, Raymond," Alexander whispered, his voice cutting through the hiss of the ruptured hydraulic line.

"Who else holds the trust authorizations?"

Vance choked, blood dripping from his split lip onto his bespoke silk tie.

"It doesn't end with me, Alexander..." Vance wheezed, a pathetic, bloody grin pulling at his mouth.

"The Apex syndicate has three dozen containers of weapons and narcotics arriving at Berth 3 before sunrise."

"The maritime customs agents are paid... the state police are ordered to look away..."

"Even if you bury me beneath this concrete, you cannot stop the machinery of the modern world."

"You are a dinosaur, Alexander... an obsolete relic of an Italian street gang fighting against global commerce."

Alexander stared into Vance’s eyes without blinking.

"My father built this harbor with his bare hands, Raymond."

"He poured the concrete you walk on, and he buried the men who thought they were bigger than this city."

"And tonight, the foundation takes another deposit."

Alexander pulled the micro-SD card from his pocket, holding it inches before Vance’s face.

"This card contains every offshore account, every encrypted routing number, and every recorded wire transfer you received from Acheron Holdings over the last five years."

"Donald Reyes handed identical copies to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois twenty minutes ago."

Vance’s bloody smile vanished instantly, all color draining from his face as the realization of total, inescapable ruin washed over him.

"You went to the feds?" Vance gasped, his voice cracking with pure disbelief.

"A Romano boss... going to the federal government?"

"I didn't go to the feds to protect my empire, Raymond," Alexander replied, his cold smile striking terror into Vance’s soul.

"I handed them your cartel so they would spend the next ten years chasing shadows in South America while I rebuild my father's house."

Alexander lowered his pistol, stepping back from the pinned port chief.

"Marco," Alexander called out.

The veteran security chief stepped forward from the shadows, holding a heavy roll of industrial duct tape and zip-ties.

"Secure Vance and Victor to the pillar beside Nonna."

"Untie my grandmother."

Marco rushed to Eleanor’s side, slicing through the heavy hemp ropes with his combat knife.

Eleanor rose to her feet, her legs unsteady, but her posture entirely unbent.

She did not look at Vance. She did not look at Victor Hale.

She walked straight toward Alexander, her frail, trembling hands reaching up to cup his bruised and blood-streaked face.

"You came back from the grave to finish it, my boy," Eleanor whispered, tears finally slipping down her weathered cheeks.

Alexander took her cold hands in his own, pressing his lips to her trembling knuckles.

"I told you at Saint Jude’s, Nonna."

"I am flesh and bone."

"And as long as I draw breath, no wolf will ever cross our threshold."

Suddenly, from the deep water beyond Berth 3, the deafening blare of a ship's horn shattered the rainy night.

A massive, unflagged container freighter was slowly emerging from the dense fog of Lake Michigan, maneuvering toward the Romano docks.

On its towering bridge, the searchlights swept across the piers, zeroing in directly on Hangar 4.

The Apex Cartel’s main shipment had arrived.

And on the deck of the approaching freighter, dozens of armed shadows were moving toward the gangways.
