Chapter 14 - The Assembly of the Seven

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel downtown was guarded by fifty armed men in bespoke black suits.
Every major newspaper, television affiliate, and syndicate captain in the tri-state area had received an emergency summons.
The rumor had spread like wildfire through the underworld and the municipal halls alike.
The lost heir of Vincent DeLuca had surfaced, and she was holding the ledger that could topple the entire state government.
On the elevated mahogany stage sat the seven district captains, led by Frank Moretti.
Beside them stood two senior agents from the United States Department of Justice, carrying federal seals.
At nine o'clock sharp, the double oak doors at the back of the hall swung wide open.
Rachel walked down the carpeted center aisle, flanked by Lucas DeLuca and Matteo.
She was not wearing an apron, and she was not hiding in the shadows of the service hallways.
She wore a tailored charcoal wool suit, her dark hair pulled back, her posture commanding and absolute.
Behind her, Samuel walked with measured grace, his ivory cane keeping time with their march.
Arthur was brought in through the side entrance by two federal marshals, his arm strapped in a sling, his face bruised and broken.
Across the room, Special Prosecutor Warren Vance sat between his defense attorneys, his hands trembling visibly.
Rachel reached the stage, stepping behind the podium beneath the glare of thirty television cameras.
She did not wait for the chairman to introduce her; she took the microphone with steady hands.
“Twenty-five years ago, my father Vincent DeLuca was murdered in his private study,” Rachel began.
Her voice echoed through the vast hall, calm, articulate, and carrying an undeniable weight of truth.
“The men who killed him claimed he died of illness, and they spent the next two decades looting his trust.”
“They told the public that the DeLuca family was a criminal syndicate beyond reform.”
“They used that lie to cover up the fact that thirty-four elected officials were sharing in the stolen profits.”
Rachel opened the black leather portfolio resting on the lectern, pulling out the digital drive and master ledger.
“This archive contains forty thousand pages of transactions, bank wires, and municipal bribery agreements.”
“It details every kickback accepted by Special Prosecutor Warren Vance from nineteen-ninety-nine to yesterday morning.”
“It shows the offshore accounts where Arthur DeLuca funneled twelve million dollars meant for public dock construction.”
“And it contains the final sworn testimony of David DeLuca, the man who gave up his life to protect this evidence.”
A chorus of camera flashes and urgent shouting erupted from the press gallery as the federal agents took the documents.
The lead DOJ investigator examined the digital certifications, nodding gravely to his partner.
The partner immediately walked across the stage, stopping directly in front of Prosecutor Vance.
Two pairs of chrome handcuffs clicked shut around Vance’s wrists before the entire press corps.
Arthur lunged forward against his marshals, screaming curses through his cracked, bloody teeth.
“You destroyed everything!” Arthur roared at Rachel.
“You burned down our house, you destroyed our name, you turned us into a joke for the news!”
Rachel looked down from the stage at the uncle who had chased her into the shadows.
“You destroyed the name when you murdered your own brother for money, Arthur,” Rachel said softly.
“I didn't burn down this house.”
“I am simply cleaning out the garbage you left behind.”
Frank Moretti stood up, raising his right hand toward the ceiling, demanding silence from the captains.
“Under the charter of the founding families,” Moretti declared, his voice echoing across the ballroom.
“The criminal syndicate known as the DeLuca family is dissolved this day.”
“All remaining assets, properties, and corporate shares are transferred into the Vincent and David Memorial Foundation.”
“Governed exclusively by Rachel DeLuca.”
The five remaining capos stood up in unison, bowing their heads in silent, total submission.
The era of street violence, bribery, and shadow executions was officially brought to an end.
Arthur was dragged backward through the security exit, his screams fading beneath the clicking of the cameras.
Rachel stood at the podium, looking out over the crowded room, her breath steady and clear.

She reached beneath her lapel, touching the cold brass key resting against her collarbone.
The truth had finally broken the surface, and the shadows had nowhere left to hide.
