Chapter 13 - The Captain's Betrayal Exposed

The convoy of police vehicles formed a wide semicircle around the Crimson shipping container, cutting off any retreat toward the water.

Twelve OCCB tactical officers in full riot gear took up positions behind open cruiser doors, their assault rifles leveled at the container.

Captain Marcus Vance strode into the center of the kill zone, his gold commander’s bars gleaming under the halogen lights.

His expression was a masterpiece of cold, calculating authority.

"Drop your weapons! Both of you!" Vance bellowed over his vehicle's external loudspeaker.

"Stand down and place your hands behind your heads!"

Nico Marino did not lower his rifle; he simply shifted his stance to place his broad frame between the open container and the police line.

Sophie stepped out from the container, walking forward with measured, fearless strides until she stood twenty feet from her commanding officer.

Her gold detective shield hung prominently over her chest, catching the flashing red and blue strobe lights.

"Lower your weapons, officers!" Sophie commanded, projecting her voice with the full authority of the law.

"This is an active federal human trafficking crime scene!"

"Detective Reed," Vance sneered, his lips curling into a condescending smirk that made Sophie’s skin crawl.

"Look at you. Covered in blood, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the most notorious organized crime boss in New York."

"I found the container, Marcus," Sophie said, refusing to use his rank.

"I found the women you authorized for clearance across our borders."

Vance chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that did not reach his cold eyes.

"You've suffered a severe psychological breakdown, Detective. The tragic suicide of your sister clearly shattered your mental stability."

Vance turned toward the line of tactical officers behind him, raising his voice so every man could hear.

"Detective Reed has been compromised! She has turned state's evidence over to the Marino syndicate and participated in the murder of private security personnel!"

"He is lying to you!" Sophie shouted to the tactical officers, pointing directly at Vance’s face.

"Captain Marcus Vance is on Victor Marino’s payroll!"

"Enough of this nonsense," Vance barked, racking the action of his shotgun with an aggressive snap.

"Reed, step away from that criminal, or my men will open fire."

Sophie pulled the heavy black canvas courier bag from her tactical vest and held it high above her head.

"I have the physical harbor master’s declaration ledgers from Locker Forty-Two-B!" Sophie shouted.

"Every single off-book shipping container! Every bribe paid to customs inspectors! Every entry stamped with Captain Vance's personal seal!"

The line of tactical officers wavered, several men exchanging uneasy glances across the hoods of their cruisers.

"She’s bluffing!" Vance snarled, taking two aggressive steps forward. "Shoot them both!"

Not a single officer pulled a trigger.

The silence on the dock became absolute, broken only by the distant crying of the rescued women inside the container.

"What are you waiting for?!" Vance screamed at his men, his composure beginning to unravel into hysterical rage.

"I gave you a direct lawful order! Neutralize the suspects!"

"It's not a bluff, Captain," Sophie said, pulling her encrypted phone from her pocket and tapping the screen.

She routed the audio output through the powerful Bluetooth receiver of Vance’s own command cruiser.

Elizabeth's voice, clear, haunting, and undeniable, blasted through the cruiser’s external speakers across the entire pier.

"Captain Vance called me twenty minutes ago... He sold me out to Victor... If I don't make it to morning, find the moon."

The officers on the perimeter lowered their rifle barrels, shock and horror spreading across their faces.

"That's Elizabeth Reed," one of the senior sergeants said, stepping out from behind his cruiser door.

"That's the tutor who died in Sunnyside three weeks ago."

"Shut that off!" Vance roared, lunging toward Sophie with his shotgun raised.

Before Vance could raise the barrel, Nico Marino moved like lightning.

Nico fired a single, pinpoint round from his Daniel Defense rifle.

The high-velocity bullet punched directly through the receiver of Vance's shotgun, shattering the firing mechanism and ripping the weapon from his hands in an explosion of sheared metal.

Vance staggered backward onto his knees, clutching his bruised fingers and howling in pain.

"Captain Marcus Vance," Sophie announced, walking forward until she towered over her disgraced superior.

"You are under arrest for federal human trafficking, racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and the unlawful death of Elizabeth Reed."

From around the corner of the container stack, the roar of an accelerating marine engine tore through the mist.

Victor Marino had reached the emergency boarding dock and was boarding a high-speed cigarette boat to escape into international waters.

Nico turned toward the sound of the roaring twin outboards, his eyes blazing with vengeance.

"He's running," Nico snarled, sprinting toward the edge of the pier.

"Nico, wait!" Sophie yelled, but the mafia heir was already gone, racing across the slick docks to settle the blood debt of his house.
