Chapter 5 - The Glass Penthouse Confrontation

Sunday morning broke with a biting northern wind that rattled the glass walls of the Coal Harbour penthouse.

Fletcher had left the apartment before dawn, claiming an emergency strategy session at Hail Capital’s downtown headquarters.

Serena sat at the marble breakfast counter, sipping peppermint tea and reviewing the digital cloned token on her secure tablet.

The dual-factor handshake was configured perfectly.

At precisely nine-thirty, the private elevator chimed.

Serena looked up, expecting a courier delivery.

The brushed steel doors slid open, and Jade Whitmore stepped directly into the private foyer.

Jade was twenty-eight years old, slender, and radiating aggressive, polished confidence.

She wore a cream-colored cashmere coat, knee-high designer leather boots, and carried a slender leather portfolio under her arm.

Her blonde hair fell in effortless waves, and her lips were painted in a sharp crimson red.

She did not wait for an invitation.

She walked into Serena’s living room, her heels clicking sharply against the white oak flooring.

Good morning, Serena, Jade said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.

I hope I am not interrupting your morning routine.

Fletcher left some critical Callaway Foundation paperwork at the office, and he asked me to drop it by for your signature.

Serena did not stand up.

She took a slow, deliberate sip of her tea and set the porcelain cup down.

You have a great deal of nerve walking into my home, Jade, Serena said calmly.

Jade offered a cold, condescending smile and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out at the harbor.

Let us drop the polite social facade, shall we? Jade murmured, turning to face Serena.

Fletcher has already made his decision.

He has been living a lie with you for three years.

He stays because of the family name, the social image, and this inconvenient pregnancy.

He does not love you, Serena.

He hasn't touched you in months.

He spends his nights in my bed in Coal Harbour, planning our future together in Seattle.

Jade unzipped the leather portfolio and pulled out a freshly printed legal agreement.

She laid it on the quartzite counter right beside Serena’s teacup.

This is an expedited marital settlement agreement, Jade said, leaning forward on both hands.

Fletcher is offering you four million dollars in cash, the family home in Shaughnessy, and generous child support.

In exchange, you sign over your secondary trustee rights in the Callaway Legacy Trust and relinquish all claims to Callaway Group voting stock.

If you sign today, the divorce is quiet, dignified, and civilized.

And if I refuse to sign your little paper? Serena asked, her voice completely devoid of emotion.

Jade’s smile vanished, replaced by a cruel, venomous smirk.

If you fight him, Fletcher will destroy you in family court.

We have medical files prepared by an independent psychiatrist documenting your severe prenatal depression.

We will argue you are mentally unfit to care for a newborn.

Fletcher will take sole custody of the baby, and you will walk away with nothing but legal fees and supervised visitation.

Be smart, Serena.

Take the money, keep the Shaughnessy house, and let Fletcher move on with someone who actually understands how modern business works.

Serena looked at the younger woman with genuine pity.

You really believe you are the one in control here, don't you, Jade?

Jade scoffed, crossing her arms.

I am the one Fletcher calls when he needs a real partner.

Serena picked up her tablet from the counter and turned the screen toward Jade.

Displayed on the glass was a complete corporate history of Hail Capital Partners.

Beneath it was a copy of Jade’s sealed non-disclosure settlement from Oregon, followed by a forensic trace of her offshore consulting bank accounts.

Do you know what this is, Jade? Serena asked softly.

Jade’s smug expression froze.

Her eyes darted across the documents, the color draining rapidly from her face.

This is the paper trail showing that your consulting company was funded directly through an offshore sub-account owned by Victor Hail, Serena explained.

Victor didn't send you to Fletcher because you are brilliant.

He sent you because Fletcher is vain, weak, and easily manipulated by a pretty face.

You think you are going to Seattle with Fletcher to build an empire?

Victor Hail is using your consulting firm as the money-laundering conduit for the $6.2 million transfer tomorrow morning.

When that transfer triggers the default, the federal maritime authorities are going to look for the recipient of the stolen trust funds.

They won't look at Victor Hail; his name isn't on a single document.

They won't even look at Fletcher; he set up the trust indemnity to shield himself.

They are going to look at the sole director of Jade Whitmore Consulting Limited.

You, Jade.

You are the sacrificial lamb.

Victor is going to take the terminal, Fletcher will take his thirty percent cut, and you are going to spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary for wire fraud.

Jade took a step back, her chest heaving as panic cracked her polished exterior.

That is a lie! Jade stammered, her voice rising an octave.

Fletcher loves me!

He promised me we were partners in the new holding company!

Fletcher doesn't love anyone, Serena said coldly.

He didn't love me, he doesn't love this child inside me, and he certainly doesn't love a woman he bought with twelve-thousand-dollar consulting invoices.

Suddenly, the private elevator chimed again.

The doors opened, and Fletcher walked in, holding a briefcase.

He stopped dead in his tracks, looking back and forth between his pale, shaking mistress and his calm, pregnant wife.

Jade? Fletcher gasped, his voice cracking.

What the hell are you doing here?

She knows, Fletcher! Jade cried out, her composure completely shattered.

She knows about Victor!

She knows about the transfer tomorrow!

She has the Oregon files, Fletcher!

Fletcher dropped his briefcase onto the floor, his face turning an ash-gray color.

He looked at Serena, who sat at the counter, calmly finishing her cup of tea.

Get out of my house, Jade, Serena said without even raising her voice.

May you like

And Fletcher, close the door behind her.

It is time you and I had our final board meeting.
