Chapter 8 - The Desperate Viper

Five miles away in Roland Park, Evan Mercer stood in the center of his wrecked study.

Broken glass from the fallen mahogany bookshelf crunched violently beneath the soles of his shoes.

His silk necktie was torn, his jaw ached where the brass globe had struck him, and his hands shook with fury.

On the desk, his laptop screen remained dark, its USB port gaping like an open wound.

He tapped the power button frantically, watching the operating system boot up.

A single glance at the access logs confirmed his worst, most terrifying nightmare.

Every single encrypted folder—the Panama ledgers, the bribe logs, the fake Pier 44 dossier—had been copied.

Six years of systematic financial extortion and municipal racketeering had walked out the front door.

"Stupid, clumsy little bitch!" Evan screamed, sweeping a crystal decanter off the desk with a vicious swing.

The heavy decanter shattered against the wall, splashing aged scotch across the antique wallpaper.

Evan sank his fingers into his hair, his chest heaving as pure, suffocating panic took hold of him.

If those files reached the United States Attorney’s Office, he would not simply lose his municipal post.

He would spend the next thirty-five years in a federal penitentiary in Cumberland.

His social status, his political ambitions, his pristine country club reputation—everything would disintegrate.

He pulled his encrypted mobile phone from his coat and dialed a private number with trembling thumbs.

The call connected after four long rings.

"What is it, Evan?" a raspy, gravelly voice answered on the other end.

It was Captain Douglas Vance, the deputy commander of the Baltimore Harbor Police District.

Vance had been on Mercer’s payroll for four years, pocketing ten thousand dollars in cash every month.

"We have a catastrophic security breach, Douglas," Evan hissed, pacing across the shattered room.

"My wife has suffered a psychotic mental breakdown."

"She broke into my home office, stole my state government laptop, and fled into the storm."

"What was on that machine, Mercer?" Vance’s voice sharpened with instant suspicion.

"Everything," Evan admitted, his voice cracking with desperation.

"The entire municipal compliance archive."

"If that drive is plugged into a federal terminal, we are both wearing orange jumpsuits by noon."

A heavy curse exploded across the phone line.

"Where is she now?" Vance demanded.

"She was picked up on Falls Road by Adrian Vale’s security convoy," Evan answered through clenched teeth.

"Vale has her in one of his downtown properties right now."

"Are you out of your mind?" Vance snapped back.

"You let Vale get his hands on the compliance records?"

"You know what that man does to people who try to muscle his shipping lines?"

"We have the law on our side, damn it!" Evan shouted, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desktop.

"She is my legal wife, and the data belongs to the State of Maryland!"

"I want an emergency warrant issued immediately for corporate espionage and grand larceny!"

"I want every patrol car in the harbor district pulling over Vale’s vehicles!"

"Shut your mouth and listen to me, Mercer," Vance ordered coldly.

"Vale owns half the dockworkers and three municipal judges in this city."

"If I roll Harbor Police units up to his private compound without hard evidence, we start a war."

"Then find a way to get her out before she decrypts the files!" Evan pleaded, sweat beading on his forehead.

"She is a certified forensic auditor, Douglas!"

"She will crack those ledgers within twenty-four hours!"

"If she hands that roadmap to federal prosecutors, we are completely finished!"

Vance fell silent for several agonizing seconds before letting out a slow, menacing exhale.

"We move up the Pier Forty-Four inspection," Vance instructed.

"We do not wait until Monday morning."

"We execute the emergency structural condemnation raid at midnight tomorrow."

"We bring thirty armed officers, seal the perimeter under public safety protocols, and raid the server rooms."

"If Vale’s servers are confiscated, whatever Nora gives the feds will look like unverified hearsay."

"And what about Nora?" Evan asked, his fingers digging into his bruised ribs.

"When we take the pier, Vale will have to trade her back to negotiate a truce," Vance said ruthlessly.

"Make sure you are standing on the dock when the handcuffs go on, Evan."

"Because if this goes sideways, you are on your own."

The line went dead.

Evan lowered the phone, his breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

He looked at his reflection in the broken glass of the framed diploma hanging on the wall.

His polished, distinguished civic mask was completely shattered, replaced by the hollow eyes of a cornered beast.

He walked down to the kitchen, poured four fingers of raw bourbon, and drank it in a single swallow.

He would crush Nora Bennett beneath the wheels of the state machine, just as he had done three years ago.

He picked up his car keys and walked out into the freezing rain.
