THE CAGE BENEATH THE CRIB / Chapter 2 / 8

Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Basement and Henry's Confession

The breathing was shallow, ragged, and coming from the far corner of the subterranean cell, hidden behind a heavy concrete pillar that supported the estate's massive foundation. I spun around, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, and lunged toward the sound. “Grace!” I shouted, my voice cracking with a terror I had never known in all my years handling syndicate wars.

A figure stumbled out from the shadows, but it wasn't Grace. It was an elderly woman wearing a frayed housekeeper's apron, her eyes wide with unutterable horror, her hands trembling violently. It was Martha, who had supposedly retired to Florida three months ago. She clutched a stained blanket to her chest, staring at me as if I were a ghost. “Master Julian,” she whimpered, dropping to her knees on the cold concrete floor. “Thank God you came back. They said you wouldn't... they said you abandoned her to save your own skin.”

Before I could demand answers, heavy footsteps echoed down the stone corridor behind me. Henry appeared in the doorway, his face ashen, looking like a man who had finally broken under an unbearable weight. He stepped between me and Martha, casting a terrified glance toward the stairs leading up to the main house. “She's coming,” Henry whispered, his voice shaking. “Julian, you have no idea what your mother is capable of. This estate isn't just a home; it's a fortress built on secrets, blood, and absolute control.”

I grabbed Henry by the lapels of his suit jacket, lifting him slightly off the floor as cold fury surged through my veins. “Where is my wife, Henry? If you don't tell me right now, I swear to God I will tear this entire building down stone by stone!” Martha began to weep softly, rocking back and forth on the floor. Henry didn't fight my grip; instead, tears welled up in his aged eyes, and he slowly pointed toward a secondary reinforced door set flush into the back wall of the cell—a door disguised to look like solid masonry.

“She didn't want an heir she couldn't control,” Henry whispered, his voice trembling so hard the words barely carried across the damp room. “Your mother... she chose your wife, Julian. She brought Grace into this family thinking she was malleable, a quiet girl from a respectable background who would bow to her rules. But when Grace refused to surrender her independence, when she threatened to take you away from this dynasty... your mother decided she was a liability.”

My grip on Henry slackened. The cold realization hit me with the force of a physical blow. My mother hadn't just driven away a daughter-in-law; she had orchestrated a calculated, cold-blooded abduction under my very roof while convincing me I was thousands of miles away fighting for our survival. But as I stared at the hidden door, a terrifying thought stopped my breath. If Grace had been locked in this primary cell, why was she no longer here? Why was the bed empty, and whose blood stained the crib upstairs?
