Chapter 5 - The Cleansing of the House

Within an hour, the Bennett mansion was swarming with police.
Red and blue lights flashed through the tall, arched windows, casting strange shadows across the manicured lawns. The quiet, peaceful illusion of the house had been shattered, but for the first time in months, Alexander felt like he could actually breathe.
He sat on a large leather sofa in the living room, holding Sophie tightly in his lap. She was wrapped in a thick, warm blanket, sipping hot chocolate that the old butler had made for her.
Her tears had stopped, but she refused to let go of her father’s shirt.
Officer Reed walked into the living room, holding a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside it were three more vials, identical to the one Sophie had found.
“We found these hidden in the false bottom of her vanity case,” Officer Reed said, holding the bag up. “Forensics will need to confirm, but based on the labels, it looks like a highly concentrated muscle relaxant and sedative. Mixed with alcohol over a long period, it can cause heart failure. It mimics a natural heart attack.”
Alexander closed his eyes, pulling Sophie closer.
“She was going to kill me.”
“Yes, sir,” Officer Reed said softly. “She was systematically weakening you. If your daughter hadn’t caught her last night… she might have finished the job.”
Alexander looked down at his brave, tiny daughter.
Sophie, who had been locked in a dark room.
Sophie, who had used a broken phone to save his life.
“I’m so sorry, Sophie,” Alexander whispered into her hair. “I was so blinded by my own grief. I just wanted our family to feel normal again. I didn’t see who she really was.”
Sophie looked up at him, her large brown eyes reflecting the fireplace.
“You’re still here, Dad,” she said softly. “That’s all that matters.”
Outside, a police cruiser pulled away, carrying Victoria Hayes into the dark.
The woman who had tried to tear their family apart for a bank account was gone. The grand mansion, which had felt like a prison to Sophie all day, suddenly felt incredibly large, but no longer frightening.
The poison had been removed.
“Mr. Bennett,” Officer Reed said, her tone much gentler now. “We have everything we need for now. I’ll leave an officer stationed at the gate tonight, just to give you some peace of mind. Tomorrow, you should take your daughter to the doctor, and you need to get bloodwork done for yourself.”
“I will,” Alexander promised. He reached out and shook the officer’s hand. “Thank you, Officer Reed. For believing her.”
Officer Reed smiled at Sophie. “She’s a very brave girl. You raised a good one.”

As the police slowly filed out of the house, the heavy wooden front doors clicked shut.
The silence that settled over the mansion wasn't the eerie, tense silence from before. It was the quiet of safety.
