Chapter 10 - The Sanitarium Ambush

The private access road winding through the ancient oak forests of Lake Forest was shrouded in dense, predawn mist.

Marcus drove the municipal van with the headlights extinguished, relying on infrared night-vision goggles to follow the curved asphalt.

Beside him, Julian held the ruggedized laptop against his chest like a holy relic, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird.

In the rear, Clara was conscious, holding a cold saline compress against her neck, her eyes wide with nervous apprehension.

"Two hundred yards to the main gate," Marcus murmured, slowing the vehicle to a crawl behind a thick cluster of hemlock trees.

Through the fog, the iron gates of the St. Jude Restorative Sanitarium stood wide open, their electronic access boxes ripped completely off the stone pillars.

Two black Ford Explorers belonging to Vanguard Security were parked diagonally across the circular limestone driveway.

"They're already inside," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with rising dread.

"Marcus, we're too late."

"Nobody is dead until I verify the pulse, kid," Marcus said coldly, pulling two tactical shotguns from the vehicle’s hidden gun rack.

"Take this Remington 870. The safety is off. If anyone wearing a Vanguard badge points a weapon at you, pump the slide and pull the trigger."

Julian took the heavy, cold weapon, his arms trembling under its weight, but his jaw set into a hard, desperate line.

They moved through the misty grounds on foot, keeping to the shadows of the manicured rhododendron hedges.

The grand brick sanitarium was dead silent, save for the rhythmic clanking of a water pump in the basement.

As they reached the rear glass conservatory doors, Marcus held up a closed fist, freezing Julian in his tracks.

Through the frosted glass, two armed men in tactical combat gear were dragging the body of an elderly night security guard toward the maintenance closet.

"Non-lethal stun darts," Marcus observed after a brief inspection of the fallen guard's neck.

"Vance is keeping the body count low until they can stage the medical death of your father."

Marcus didn't wait; he stepped through the shattered glass door, leveled his suppressed sidearm, and dropped both contractors with two precise shots to the center mass.

"Move! Room 104 is at the end of the north corridor," Julian yelled, sprinting down the carpeted hallway.

They burst through the heavy mahogany doors of Room 104 just as a tall man in a pristine white doctor's coat reached for the main ventilator switch.

Beside the bed stood a second Vanguard contractor, his weapon pointed directly at an elderly nurse cowering in the corner.

Lying in the bed, surrounded by banks of digital monitors, was Vincenzo Russo, seventy-two years old, his silver hair combed back neatly from his weathered, lion-like face.

His eyes were open, bright, alert, and filled with cold, ancient fury as he glared at the assassin standing over his life-support console.

"Step away from my father!" Julian roared, leveling the shotgun with both hands.

The contractor whirled around, raising his submachine gun, but Marcus fired first, shattering the contractor's elbow with a heavy copper slug.

The man collapsed, screaming, dropping his weapon onto the hardwood floor.

The man in the white lab coat turned around slowly, raising his hands with a sickening, condescending smile.

"Julian Russo," the man said smoothly, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles.

"You're late for the family estate execution."

Julian stared at the man, the last piece of the monstrous conspiracy clicking into place.

"Doctor Donovan Vance," Julian gasped, disgust choking his throat.

"You didn't send a hitman to pull the plug."

"You came to murder my father yourself."

"When you want an empire dismantled legally, Julian, you don't delegate the signature," Vance replied with absolute arrogance.

"Your father had a stroke, yes, but he retained full mental capacity under federal medical definitions."

"He refused to sign over the municipal harbor leases to Vanguard three weeks ago."

"So I had to manufacture a crisis that would force his ambitious, foolish younger son to do it for him."

Julian took three slow, deliberate steps forward, the barrel of the shotgun never wavering from Vance's chest.

"I was foolish, Vance," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of fear.

"I was arrogant, I was blind, and I wanted my father's respect so desperately that I let you poison my family."

"But I am still a Russo."

Julian tossed the ruggedized laptop onto the side table, hitting the spacebar to illuminate the screen.

"Daniel's ledger is already uploading to the Department of Justice, the Illinois State Police, and every news affiliate in the Midwest."

"The maritime encryption keys have been revoked."

"Your ship at Terminal 4 is trapped in the river basin."

Vance’s face darkened, the aristocratic veneer cracking into ugly, desperate rage.

He reached into his lab coat pocket for a compact automatic pistol, but before he could clear the fabric, a sound came from the hospital bed.

Vincenzo Russo, paralyzed on his left side for a month, drove his powerful right hand forward, grabbing Vance's silk tie with vice-like strength.

The old patriarch pulled the corporate CEO downward toward the mattress, his silver eyes blazing with the ferocious pride of a legendary godfather.

"In... my... house..." Vincenzo growled, his deep, gravelly voice slurred by the stroke but dripping with absolute dominance.

"You... do... not... touch... my... sons."

Julian didn't hesitate; he drove the heavy wooden stock of the shotgun into Vance's jaw with all the strength in his body.

Vance collapsed to the floor, his glasses shattering, blood pouring from his broken mouth as Marcus immediately pinned his wrists with heavy zip-ties.

Julian dropped the shotgun, falling to his knees beside his father's bed, burying his face in the old man's blankets.

"Father... I'm sorry... God, I'm so sorry..." Julian wept, his shoulders shaking with years of suppressed pain.

Vincenzo's weathered, calloused right hand rose slowly from the bed, resting gently upon the back of Julian's neck.

"You... came... back," the old man whispered, his thumb wiping a tear from his son's cheek.

"Where... is... Gabriel?"

Julian lifted his head, his eyes shining with newfound purpose and pride.

"He is at Terminal 4, Father," Julian said, standing tall.

"He is finishing what we started."
