Chapter 12 - The Trap Springs Shut

Jake backed away slowly until his spine slammed against the cold steel of a shipping container.
His pistol was still gripped in his right hand, the barrel pointing wildly between Luca and the catwalks above.
“You can't touch me, Castellano,” Jake stammered, licking his dry lips, his eyes wild with the terror of a cornered rat.
“I have legal standing!”
“I’m Emma’s father!”
“I have a registered birth certificate from the hospital in King County!”
Luca stopped five feet away from him.
The amber-flecked eyes were devoid of hatred; they held only the dead, heavy weight of absolute judgment.
“You never signed a legal birth certificate, Jake,” Luca said quietly, pulling the black leather ledger from his inner pocket and tossing it onto the metal table between them.
“You signed a counterfeit intake form paid for by Victor Moretti’s bribes.”
“And the moment you filed that emergency Amber Alert in downtown Seattle this morning, you triggered a federal forensic audit of every financial transaction you’ve made since the day Thomas Carter died.”
Jake stared down at the ledger, his face turning the color of wet limestone.
“How... how did you find out about the audit?”
“I didn't,” Luca answered.
“The federal banking commission has been investigating Moretti’s shell companies for three years.”
“They were just waiting for you to step into a public precinct and sign your name to a sworn affidavit.”
“By filing that false kidnapping claim, you legally tied your identity to the stolen trust documents.”
“The moment the detectives pulled your signature, the federal warrant for grand larceny, corporate espionage, and extortion was issued.”
The heavy iron doors at the rear of the warehouse banged open once more.
This time, three federal marshals in dark windbreakers marched inside, accompanied by two port inspectors carrying digital evidence bags.
The lead marshal stopped ten feet from Jake, holding up a stiff parchment document.
“Jacob Tyler Martinez,” the marshal announced, his voice booming through the empty hall.
“You are under arrest for federal mail fraud, conspiracy to commit maritime sabotage, and the unlawful extortion of the Carter estate.”
“Put your hands behind your back.”
Jake looked at the marshals, then back at Luca, his mind finally snapping under the crushing realization of his total defeat.
With a desperate, animal snarl, Jake lifted his Beretta, aiming it straight at Luca’s chest.
“I’d rather die in this warehouse than rot in a federal cage!”
His finger squeezed the trigger.
The hammer clicked on an empty chamber.
Luca hadn't even blinked.
Dante’s sniper rifle cracked from the upper catwalk with the sharp report of thunder in a small room.
A 30-caliber round passed clean through Jake’s right wrist, turning bone and tendon into a bloody mist.
The pistol dropped from his shattered hand, clattering loudly against the concrete floor.
Jake let out a shrill, piercing shriek of agony, clutching his mangled wrist as he collapsed sideways onto his knees.
Blood poured freely between his fingers, soaking into the greasy dirt of the pier.
Two federal marshals rushed forward instantly, slamming Jake face-first into the concrete and clicking steel handcuffs around his remaining functional wrist.
“You’re finished, Martinez,” the lead marshal said, hauling him upright by his jacket.
“Moretti was arrested in his Bellevue mansion twenty minutes ago.”
“Your empire is gone.”
As they dragged Jake screaming toward the exit, his boots dragging lifelessly across the floor, he turned his head once to look at Luca.
His eyes were wide with a mix of madness and pure, unfiltered hatred.
“She’ll never love a monster like you, Castellano!” Jake roared as the heavy doors began to close.
“You’re just a killer in an expensive suit!”
May you like
The steel doors slammed shut, cutting off his voice entirely.
The warehouse sank back into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the distant dripping of rain from the rusted roof trusses.
