Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Assembly at Dawn

The first pale rays of October dawn reflected off the mirrored glass exterior of the sixty-story W.M.G. World Headquarters in downtown Manhattan.
The morning mist hung low over the city streets as yellow taxicabs and luxury sedans navigated the early commuter traffic below.
On the executive penthouse floor, the silence was broken only by the hum of industrial climate control systems and the click of polished leather shoes.
Julian Montgomery stepped out of the private express elevator at precisely seven-forty-five in the morning.
He was dressed in a bespoke midnight-blue three-piece suit cut from imported English wool, paired with a crimson silk tie and gold initialed cufflinks.
His hair was meticulously styled with expensive pomade, and his face was shaved clean, masking the raging anxiety that had kept him awake all night.
Despite his outwardly polished appearance, a nervous twitch pulled at the corner of his left eye every few seconds.
He had spent the entire night trying to reach Claire Sterling's personal phone, only to be routed directly to automated voicemail every single time.
He had convinced himself that Claire had simply panicked, lost her phone, or was hiding out until the morning meeting concluded.
He refused to believe that the voice on the driveway speakerphone belonged to the cousin he had declared dead three years prior.
""Mr. Montgomery, Director Finch is waiting for you in the executive briefing suite,"" a nervous young administrative assistant announced from her desk.
""Good, make sure nobody disturbs us, and have two carafes of Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee sent in immediately,"" Julian commanded coldly.
He pushed open the frosted glass doors of the private briefing suite, where Director Harold Finch was pacing nervously near the panoramic window.
Harold Finch was an aging, silver-haired corporate opportunist who had served on the executive board for over twenty years.
His loyalty was never rooted in company principles, but entirely in whichever faction promised to protect his lucrative consulting contracts.
""Julian, where on earth have you been?"" Harold Finch demanded, turning around with deep, dark bags under his eyes.
""I received three frantic phone calls before dawn about suspicious police activity near William's private retreat in Whispering Pines,"" Harold whispered frantically.
""Word on Wall Street is that Arthur Vance mobilized the firm's tier-one crisis response security team in the middle of the night,"" Harold continued.
""If Arthur is preparing a hostile defense, this entire proxy vote could blow up in our faces on the trading floor,"" Harold warned.
Julian waved his manicured hand dismissively, pouring himself a glass of ice water from the crystal decanter on the table.
""Calm yourself down, Harold, you are panicking over meaningless street rumors,"" Julian scoffed with practiced arrogance.
""Arthur Vance is an obsolete relic clinging to power with trembling old hands,"" Julian sneered, sipping the cold water.
""My sources confirm that a minor local vagrant attempted to break into the founder's estate garage last night,"" Julian lied smoothly.
""The local police handled the trespasser, and Claire Sterling secured the premises under operational protocols,"" Julian assured him.
""Arthur Vance is rushing around like a headless chicken because he knows his thirty-five-year reign ends at nine o'clock sharp,"" Julian proclaimed.
Harold Finch adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles, looking unconvinced as he wrung his nervous hands together.
""Are you absolutely certain we have the necessary board quorum to force Arthur's immediate resignation?"" Harold asked hesitantly.
""Evelyn Ward controls twenty-two percent of the institutional voting shares through her family endowment fund,"" Harold reminded him.
""If Evelyn senses even a hint of procedural illegality, she will freeze the proxy vote and demand an external federal audit,"" Harold said.
Julian sneered, reaching into his leather briefcase and withdrawing a thick, blue-bound folder stamped with gold executive seals.
""Evelyn Ward is a sentimental old woman who cares only about corporate share stability and quarterly dividends,"" Julian said dismissively.
""In this dossier, I have compiled extensive documentation showing that Arthur Vance mismanaged forty million dollars in European logistics capital,"" Julian claimed.
""I have doctored the audit summaries to show that Arthur concealed massive accounting discrepancies following William's death,"" Julian revealed with a wicked grin.
""Once I present this evidence to the board, Evelyn will vote to strip Arthur of his executive authority within ten minutes,"" Julian guaranteed.
""And the moment Arthur is removed, I will invoke the emergency trustee clause to assume full control of the Montgomery estate shares,"" Julian declared.
He slid a smaller, sealed white envelope across the mahogany conference table toward Harold Finch's trembling hands.
""Inside that envelope is a signed transfer agreement granting your family trust five hundred thousand restricted stock units upon my confirmation as Chairman,"" Julian whispered.
""You stand with me when the gavel strikes, Harold, and you will be the richest senior director on Wall Street by noon,"" Julian promised.
Harold Finch stared down at the white envelope, his greedy eyes glistening as he quickly slid the documents into the inside pocket of his coat.
""I will second your motion for Arthur's removal, Julian,"" Harold agreed in a low, conspiratorial murmur.
""Just make sure your operational reports are airtight when the gavel hits the sounding block,"" Harold cautioned.
While the two conspirators plotted behind closed doors on the fiftieth floor, an unmarked black SUV arrived in the private underground garage below.
The service elevator doors slid open in the basement, admitting Arthur Vance and me into the secured executive corridor.
I was no longer wearing the grease-stained heather-grey fleece and faded sweatpants from the night before.
I was dressed in a sharp, charcoal-grey three-piece suit crafted from bespoke Italian wool, tailored perfectly to my broad engineering frame.
Fastened securely to my left wrist was my father's vintage rose-gold Patek Philippe perpetual calendar watch.
And resting safely inside my interior breast pocket was the tarnished brass compass containing the cryptographic master key to the company's soul.
Arthur Vance walked beside me, carrying a heavy titanium briefcase packed with fifty certified forensic audit dossiers.
""The board members are already congregating in the executive dining lounge, David,"" Arthur murmured as the elevator ascended rapidly.
""Evelyn Ward, Robert Hayes, Sarah Lin, and the junior institutional trustees are all present,"" Arthur informed me.
""Julian believes he has successfully backed me into a corner with fabricated accounting reports,"" Arthur added with a cold smirk.
""Let him believe he is winning right up until the exact second the doors open, Arthur,"" I replied calmly, watching the digital floor numbers climb.
""Arrogant men always expose their throats most completely when they believe victory is already assured,"" I observed.
""Where do you want me to wait while Julian makes his opening remarks?"" I asked.
""In the Chairman's private observation suite behind the one-way polarized glass wall,"" Arthur instructed, pointing to the hallway layout.
""The audio feed is wired directly into the master podium, and you will control the presentation override console,"" Arthur explained.
The elevator chimed softly as it reached the sixty-story penthouse summit, opening into the marble-floored antechamber outside the grand boardroom.
Arthur turned to me, offering a solemn, respectful nod that carried the weight of thirty-five years of corporate history.
""Your father spent his entire life building an empire based on honor, engineering brilliance, and absolute integrity, David,"" Arthur whispered softly.
""Today, you take back what belongs to your bloodline,"" Arthur said with profound conviction.

I looked at the massive double mahogany doors leading into the boardroom, my expression carved from pure, unyielding stone.
""Let's go finish this, Arthur,"" I replied.
