Chapter 4 - The Highway Chase and the Bloody Secret

My heart slammed violently against my ribs like a trapped bird.

“A tail? They’re right behind us?” I gasped, twisting around to look through the tinted rear glass of the Maybach, seeing only a chaotic blur of morning commuter traffic splashing through the gray autumn rain.

“Calm down, Clara. Keep your head down and keep Lily shielded,” Marco ordered sharply, his hand dropping instinctively toward his shoulder holster beneath his tailored wool coat.

Up in the front, the driver—a silent, heavily built operative named Viktor whom I had occasionally seen working the estate gates—didn't panic. His hands tightened smoothly on the leather steering wheel, his eyes flicking effortlessly between the side mirrors and the dashboard navigation screen.

“Viktor, drop two cars back and box them in near the upcoming service exit,” Dominic’s voice crackled through the secure comms system, sounding terrifyingly calm, like a grandmaster orchestrating a chess match from a penthouse office miles away. “Let’s see if they’re brave enough to follow us off the main highway.”

With a sickening surge of raw horsepower, the heavy armored Maybach seamlessly accelerated, weaving through a gap in the heavy truck traffic with astonishing agility for such a massive vehicle.

I held Lily tightly against my chest, burying her face in my wool scarf so she wouldn't see the blurring lights or sense the mounting panic suffocating the car.

“Mommy, are we playing a race game?” Lily asked cheerfully, completely oblivious to the lethal game of cat and mouse unfolding around us.

“Yes, sweetie. Just close your eyes and count to twenty,” I whispered, my voice trembling so violently I could barely form the words.

Through the rear window, I watched in sheer horror as the anonymous gray sedan we had spotted on the traffic cameras suddenly surged forward, ignoring standard traffic safety buffers, aggressively cutting off a semi-truck in an desperate attempt not to lose us.

The dent on its rear passenger-side fender gleamed maliciously under the gray morning sky—the exact detail Lily had pointed out in her childish, innocent way three days ago.

“They’re locked on,” Marco muttered, unlatching his glove compartment and pulling out a heavy, matte-black firearm with swift, practiced efficiency. He slapped a fresh magazine into place with a sharp metallic click.

“Don’t engage unless they make a play for the vehicle,” Dominic’s voice commanded through the speaker, carrying absolute, chilling authority. “I want to know who owns that car. I want their name, their bank accounts, and whoever hired them kneeling on my office floor by midnight.”

“Understood, Boss,” Marco replied, keeping the weapon concealed low against the seat cushion.

Viktor suddenly yanked the steering wheel hard to the right, signaling a sharp lane change across three lanes of roaring traffic, diving toward the crumbling concrete off-ramp of an abandoned industrial park exit.

The gray sedan screamed in protest, its tires smoking against the wet asphalt as it violently whipped across the lanes, refusing to let us escape its sights.

Whoever was inside that car wasn't just a curious observer or a low-level thug. They were hunting us with cold, calculated persistence.

And as the Maybach rocketed down the desolate off-ramp toward the abandoned warehouses lining the riverfront, I realized with terrifying clarity that my four years of quiet anonymity inside the Moretti estate were officially over.
