Chapter 5 - The Forensic Truth

The ambulance ride was a blur of flashing red and blue lights. My father sat next to me in the back, holding my uninjured hand. For the first time in months, I felt safe. I felt the steady rise and fall of my baby kicking, as if he, too, knew the danger had passed.

At the hospital, I was taken to a private room.

A forensic nurse named Sarah, specialized in domestic abuse cases, gently examined my body. She documented every single mark.

"This wrist injury is at least two weeks old," Sarah noted, taking high-resolution photos with a specialized camera. "It was never treated. It healed improperly. And these bruises on your ribs... they match the shape of knuckles. This wasn't a fall, Claire. This was a sustained assault."

My obstetrician, Dr. Aris, rushed into the room, her face pale with worry.

"Claire, I am so sorry," Dr. Aris said, holding my chart. "We received several cancellation requests from your patient portal. We were told you were on bed rest and couldn't travel. We had no idea..."

"They used my husband's phone to access my portal," I explained, my voice hollow. "They changed my password."

"The bloodwork just came back," Dr. Aris continued, her expression turning grim. "Your iron levels are dangerously low, and your blood pressure is spiking. You haven't been taking your medication, have you?"

"They locked it away," I whispered. "They only gave me doses when I complied with their demands."

"This is medical deprivation," Dr. Aris said, turning to the police officer waiting by the door. "The baby is under severe cardiovascular stress due to the mother’s untreated hypertension. If she had gone another two weeks without this medication, she could have suffered a stroke, or worse, we could have lost the baby."

My father stood in the corner of the room, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscle leaped. He didn't speak. He didn't yell. But the cold, calculating fury radiating from him was palpable.

By evening, the lead detective entered the room.

"Mr. Mercer—Colonel Mercer," the detective corrected himself. "Grant was taken into custody, but because of his military status and the lack of prior police reports, his defense attorney managed to secure a temporary release on bail pending formal charges. The prosecutor wants to organize the digital forensic evidence before filing the heavy felony counts."

I felt a cold wave of panic wash over me. "He's out?"

"He's out," the detective confirmed. "But he has been ordered to stay away from the residence."

My phone buzzed on the bedside table.

It was a text message from an unknown number—but the tone was unmistakable. It was Evelyn’s backup burner phone.

“Come home, apologize, and tell the police you lied,” the text read. “Otherwise, Grant will file for full custody of the baby. We have documented your 'instability' for months. We will prove you are an unfit mother, and you will never see your child again. Don't ruin your husband's career over a temper tantrum.”

I stared at the screen, my heart rate spiking.

My father gently took the phone from my hand. He read the message, his eyes narrowing.

"He still thinks fear is his weapon," Dad said, deleting the message after taking a screenshot for the detectives.

"It was," I said, looking down at my pregnant belly, feeling a newfound strength rising within me. "Not anymore."
